Greendale Arch Ready Early Next Year

The arch is meant to bring more visitors into the Village Center and will be built next to the LED sign.

The arch meant to bring more visitors to the Village Center, is expected to welcome drivers in January. The Village Board awarded the project bid to Poblocki Sign Company, LLC for $90,237. Grandhaven, LLC, landord to the Village Center merchants, has agreed to pay half the cost. Construction is expected to start this month and should be done by mid-January, according to Village Manager Todd Michaels. The final design for the arch was approved in July. The arch will be placed on Northway and Grange Avenue next to the new LED sign. Discussions with business owners about what began as a modest gateway arch design started in June 2011. Around the same time, staff proposed the LED sign as a way to replace the old "welcome" sign at the …

The first thing I noticed about the LED sign as I waited in the left lane at a red light eastbound on Grange, was that one of the traffic poles (Walk light I believe) obscures the view of the sign. As I look at the Patch picture, it appears the arch base will only exacerbate this issue for the right lane too. Surely, the sign gods do not expect me to read lengthy messages while driving in motion…   more ›

After a Year, Village Board Approves Final Design of Arch

The much discussed arch will be placed on Northway and Grange Avenue next to the new LED sign. Both are meant to attract new visitors coming from Southridge Mall to the Village Center.

In an effort to bring more visitors to the Village Center, the Village Board approved the final designs for a gateway arch, despite a trustee’s fiscal objections. The board voted, 6-1, Tuesday night to approve the final design. Trustee Carl Genz voted against it. He said it would be better to spend money on the arch when the economy becomes more financially stable. He supports the arch, but said, “I just don’t know if right now is the right time to be making an investment in this.” The arch has been included in the this year’s budget but Genz said even though it is it doesn’t mean the money needs to be spent. Genz suggested considering it for another year’s budget. The designed arch is estimated to cost $90,000 but will be bid out to …

Planning Commission Approves Design For Gateway Arch

The gateway arch will be placed next to the already built LED sign on Northway and Grange Avenue.

After almost a year of planning a gateway arch has been approved by the Planning Commission and will be placed next to an LED sign, in an effort to bring more visitors to the Village Center. The commission voted 5-1 Wednesday night to send the Village Board a recommendation for approval of the design; Commissioner Bernard G. Schroedl voting against it. The arch will be placed on Northway and Grange Avenue next to the new LED sign. In May, commissioners, including some shop owners, thought the rectangular shape of four of the proposed designs seemed too industrial. Staff came back with two more rounded designs. The recommended arch will have the brick piers from the second design (see attached PDFs) and square posts from the first design. …

Great ideas, Evonne! Maybe suggest them to the Village Manager and the Village Board to pursue. Those places would bring people to the Village...and to Southridge, so a double win. And for Southridge, how about more stores for women to shop at, like Dress Barn, Coldwater Creek, White House Black Market, etc....not just shoes and kids' stores!!   more ›

Planning Commission Will Review New Gateway Arch Designs

New arch designs will be reviewed Wednesday after the commission and shop owners expressed their disfavor for a rectangular arch.

The Planning Commission will review new proposed designs for a gateway arch Wednesday after they were sent back to staff for tweaking. The arch will be placed on Northway and Grange Avenue next to the newly built LED sign and is meant to welcome visitors to the Village Center. In May, commissioners, including some shop owners, thought the rectangular shape of four of the proposed designs seemed too industrial and did not portray the “charm” of the Village. Staff received further direction from the commission in June and has developed a rounder design. The arch is part of an ongoing effort to bring visitors to the boutiques, shops and restaurants that comprise the Village Center. Grandhaven LLC, owners of part of Downtown, have agreed to …

See that is the problem we have in the village. Even the village people do not support what is down there which is really sad. Granted there are some that do, i know we are down there at least once a week at one or more places. But if you look at the picture even from long ago, we never had a problem in the village until southridge was built. Then it was the plaza with Kohls. And then Menards, …   more ›

Trustees Worry About Construction Timing of Proposed Arch

Some trustees are worried the proposed gateway arch will be bounced in between groups delaying its eventual construction.

Some trustees are worried construction of the proposed gateway arch will be bounced in between groups and delayed, after the Planning Commission sent designs back to staff last week.  Commissioners, including some shop owners, weren’t fond of the proposed design and thought the rectangular shape seemed too industrial. Many preferred a rounded sign, however, that would likely cost more. A rectangular arch would cost $115,000, half of which will be paid by Grandhaven, LLC., landlords to the Village Center shops. The idea originated with discussion between village officials and downtown business owners last June.  Many are hoping to have the sign done in time for Greendale’s 75th Anniversary celebrations in 2013. Village Manager Todd Michaels…

This whole arch design and construction is like putting the cart before the horse! You really need to establish a direction before you begin to assemble the parts. The whole area needs to be re-branded, and a concise development plan designed and implemented. For the cost of this arch, a dynamic and forward thinking marketing firm could be setting up some guidelines for the future of this …   more ›

Updated: Proposed Gateway Arch Designs Need Sprucing Up

The proposed rectangular shape of the arch was met with resistance. This will be the second sign this year designed to attract downtown visitors.

Updated 9:56 a.m.: Cost have been added The Greendale Planning Commission wasn't happy with the proposed designs for a gateway arch meant to bring visitors to the Village Center shops, and sent them back to staff for further review. Commissioners, including some shop owners, thought the rectangular shape of four of the proposed designs seemed too industrial and did not portray the “charm” of the Village. They spoke about the designs at the commission's Wednesday night meeting. They preferred a rounded arch, but Village Manager Todd Michaels said that would cost twice as much as the rectangular one. The rectangular arch uses standard traffic signal poles, while a rounded arch would need custom-made supports. The current estimated cost of …

I have for years heard people admit they had never been to the Village center. We get mixed up with Greenfield and Glendale pretty often in the news. I think signs are a good idea, too many people think Greendale is Southridge. I especially liked the oval, it is more appealing.   more ›

Gateway Arch on Northway Sent to Planning Commission

The gateway arch, which will be located near an approved LED sign, is part of an effort to attract more visitors into the Village Center for events and local shopping.

Three possible designs for a gateway arch at Northway and Grange Avenue were sent for review to the Planning Commission by the Village Board at Tuesday’s meeting. The proposed arch would be on Northway, about 60 feet south of the intersection with Grange Avenue, near a new  LED sign on that same intersection. The arch and the LED sign are part of an ongoing effort to bring visitors to the boutiques, shops and restaurants that comprise the quaint Village Center. The final design proposals are based off an initial design concept presented by R.A. Smith. Poblocki Sign Company has worked with staff to complete the three final designs for the gateway arch. PDFs of the designs can be found attached to this article.  The proposed gateway arch …

Bravo Bren. They should also consider that there are no direct routes to Broad Street, so wherever they put the "Arch" and LED sign (really...we need LED?) will lead traffic directly through residential areas. I know that the increased traffic on Northway has already made it difficult for those living along it to even get out onto Northway, and now "we" want even more traffic funneled through one…   more ›
