Inside the Bubble

Avoiding a Valentine’s Day Massacre

It almost seems like an annual thing, as Valentine’s Day once again sneaks into Greendale.

Okay, girls – get out.  Like a good Deer Camp, this column is ‘Guys Only’… only less gassy. Or maybe more gassy – we have not decided yet. Bottom line, females, you need to click the next hyperlink out of here.  You got five seconds.  Go, go, go…nothing for you to see here.  5, 4, 3, 2… 1! Guys, it is now an estrogen free zone. You can stop holding in your gut.  Let the dog in house.  It is just us.  Get rid of that coaster. Gentlemen, I hate call this Emergency Bro Meeting on such short notice.  But, boys, we got Trouble.  That is right, Trouble. With a capital T.  And that rhymes V and that stands for… Valentine’s Day.  Today. This is not a test.  This is an actual emergency. A little history: This day used to be named “Saint Valentine’s…

Funny how songwriters seem to pick the worst among us menfolks! They must only be attracted to Neanderthals and Cretans... they date and then they hate, and we get the next new song!   more ›

Why Valentine's Day is Special to Me

A personal story from your local editor.

So Valentine's Day is today. I wrote this same story last year. I figured what the heck, why not re-run it again.  Up until three years ago I always thought that this day was invented by Hallmark in a scheme to make money but that all changed on February 14, 2009. It was late January in 2009 when my friends and I thought it would be funny to attend a speed-dating event at my school, Marquette University. Also, it was a way to support my best friend’s fraternity who was hosting the event. At the beginning of the event we all got puzzle pieces and if your puzzle piece matched someone else's then you were meant to go on a date together. As the event went on I showed slight interest to each guy who came to talk to me during the event. Then …

Share the Object of Your Affection

Upload a photo, leave a comment and tell us what (or who) has your heart this Valentine's Day.

Happy Valentine's Day! Take a moment or two and upload a photo of you and the object of your affection, no matter what it may be. I'll start things off with pictures of my children. I can't stop smiling at my 4-month-old daughter and 4-year-old son. She's a delightfully happy little girl whose smiles melt my heart, and he's showing me every day what a loving nature he has in how he wants to take care of her.

PDAs Not a Problem for High Schools

Students are following policies limiting in-school affection to hand-holding and hugs.

Everyone remembers the couples who were always together at break times, lunch and before and after school. The ones who were caught kissing in corners, and who walked the halls with their hands in each others' pockets. It seemed someone was always pushing the limits of acceptable public displays of affection. With Valentine's Day this week, Patch checked in to see what the prevailing trends are in some area high schools.  The policies are fairly consistent across districts, with hand-holding and hugging allowed—but officials frowning upon much more than that. Greendale High School's policy is that students "shall not" engage in physical displays of affection inappropriate for a public setting. School personnel use their "professional …

Get a Burrito Half-Off by Kissing at Qdoba

The promotion is good on Valentine's Day.

Customers at the Qdoba restaurant in Greenfield can get discounted food on Tuesday, if they don't mind a little PDA. The nationwide chain is bringing back a Valentine's Day promotion that, according to spokeswoman Ashley Cohen, tens of thousands of customers took advantage of in 2011. Anyone who buys an entree can get another for half off—once they kiss a fellow customer at the cash register. It doesn't matter (to Qdoba) who it is. No coupon is necessary. The promotion is happening nationwide, though in states other than Wisconsin, inexplicably, the second entree is free, not 50 percent off. The Qdoba on 76th Street is open during normal hours, from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Valentine's Day.

For some reason, Wisconsin is only buy one, get one half-off. I called and spoke with an employee yesterday who said the same, unfortunately. I guess word has gotten out about how much Wisconsinites love our free stuff.   more ›

Vote in the Food Fight: Date Night Poll

Which of these is your favorite place for a date in Greendale?

Patch asked, and you answered, in comments on Facebook, stories and restaurant reviews. From our original field of restaurants, we've narrowed it down to these. Share the Love - Craft Style

Patch gives you three ideas for Valentine's Day crafts to do with the kids - or by yourself. Share photos of your projects, and your craft ideas, too!

Start your own love story, by sitting down at the craft table with a child. My 4-year-old son and I spent the afternoon with his grandmother this week making a variety of Valentine's Day crafts.  I found all the ideas online. Take a look at the pictures, and check out the links. If you've got a great idea for a Valentine's Day activity, share a photo and the directions with us. Feel free to enter information in the photo gallery or the comment section.  Here are the activities we did: 1. Door hanger from Toddler Toddler  Supplies needed: Piece of cardboard or other stiff material, foam heart stickers, yarn/ribbon/tulle. I made a mistake at the craft store and bought foam hearts that weren't stickers, so we glued those ones on. It worked …
