How Safe Are Our Schools?

Patch surveyed area school districts about security measures in place at their schools. See how Greendale compares with other Milwaukee-area districts.

The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut stole 26 lives and again opened the door on conversations about gun control and mental health. But another topic that has emerged is security in schools, and whether we are doing enough to keep children safe. Following the shooting, the National Rifle Association advocated arming teachers and stationing armed guards in schools.  Patch surveyed Milwaukee-area school districts on their schools' security practices, including the Greendale School District. Greendale schools have secured access and visitors need to be buzzed into the buildings. Typically parents and other community members are allowed to enter the building for meetings. In 1973 I remember you could come and go freely as students. If you had enough credits you didn't always have to be on campus. Guess it cuts town on people skipping class, but it is sad kids aren't as free and we have to worry about our safety more now a days.   more ›

NRA Calls for 'Armed Security' Around Schools

In an amazing Friday morning press conference, the National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, CT and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools.
