Patch surveyed area school districts about security measures in place at their schools. See how Greendale compares with other Milwaukee-area districts.
The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut stole 26 lives and again opened the door on conversations about gun control and mental health. But another topic that has emerged is security in schools, and whether we are doing enough to keep children safe. Following the shooting, the National Rifle Association advocated arming teachers and stationing armed guards in schools. Patch surveyed Milwaukee-area school districts on their schools' security practices, including the Greendale School District. Greendale schools have secured access and visitors need to be buzzed into the buildings. Typically parents and other community members are allowed to enter the building for meetings. The 16 districts that responded to the survey are…
High school senior charged with making the threat to stop homecoming pleaded guilty today.
High school senior Nicholas Olson admitted in court today that he wrote the threatening message in a bathroom that prompted school officials to move the homecoming dance to the middle school. The 17-year-old was charged with a misdemeanor, disorderly conduct, stemming from an incident last September in which he wrote a threat on a bathroom wall at Greendale High School. He pleaded guilty Thursday in Milwaukee Circuit Court. The threat, "3 DAYS TILL BOOM JK OR AM I?", was found on the wall of a bathroom stall Sept. 20. As a precaution the homecoming dance on Sept. 22 was moved to an alternate location in the middle school. In addition, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s bomb-sniffing dogs conducted searches of the school campus. During the …

In a response to the tragic shooting in Connecticut, the Greendale superintendent released a message letting the community know there will be increased police presence this week.
In response to the tragic shootings in Newtown, Conn., village police officers will have an increased presence this week in Greendale schools, according to a message from Superintendent John Tharp. "It is difficult to imagine the pain the events of Friday have brought upon them," Tharp said in the Sunday message. "Even though this took place far away from Greendale, its impact reaches across the nation and gives us reason to pause and think about our own schools and the safety and well-being of our own children." The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School cut the lives of many children and adults short. Schools across the country — including Greendale — have notification systems that enables them to quickly reach parents in such …

A ban at Waukesha West rankled some students and parents, though it's been done in other areas of the country. Administrators cite safety reasons; students say backpacks are more efficient.
Waukesha West High School banned backpacks during the school day this year. Principal David Towers said the ban was made for issues of safety and to prevent contraband —drugs, alcohol and weapons — from being carried around. Such bans have taken place elsewhere, both permanently and temporarily. Fargo, ND, schools took the step last year. And a school district in New York state banned backpacks and purses for a period last spring following two arrests, one for a marijuana sale and one for a gun threat. Students, predictably, were displeased. Some started a Facebook event to rally protests; though more than 300 people joined the event, nobody has posted to the page since Sept. 6. But anyone who spent their high school days lugging stacks of…

In 1973 I remember you could come and go freely as students. If you had enough credits you didn't always have to be on campus. Guess it cuts town on people skipping class, but it is sad kids aren't as free and we have to worry about our safety more now a days.   more ›
