Where is Norman Rockwell?

Norman Rockwell has gone missing. Hibernation for the winter?

Greendale residents may have noticed the Norman Rockwell statue missing from its usual place in the Village Center.  Norman has gone into hibernation for the winter.  Grandhaven Manager Anne Marie Pierce, owners of the statue, said that the corner he resides at is where they pile snow.  "If it ever snows that is! As such we needed to remove him so we can be ready for snow plowing season," Pierce said. "We didn’t want him sitting under a big snow bank!" The plan is to bring him back once the snow and ice melt and signs of Spring appear. There is no specific date but most likely end of March, early April. The sculpture of the 20th century illustrator, located on the southeast corner of Broad Street and Northway, was approved by the Greendale…

Inside the Bubble

Greendale Vision: Henry F. Potter vs George Bailey

After the controversial addition of the Norman Rockwell sculpture and creation of the Village Center ad hoc committee, columnist Mike Vickery consults with some fictional town planners.

"Trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created." - Doobie Brothers As of last Saturday, with some controversy, Greendale, Wisconsin officially became a “Norman Rockwell Village”.  We could, without question, do much worse. Better to be a Norman Rockwell Village than say a Salvador Dali Village.  Sure, our colors would be impossibly brilliant, but a melting clock on Village Hall would be an annoying, inaccurate timepiece, at best.  The Norman Rockwell statue, by any measure, certainly beats a depiction of “The Hallucinogenic Toreador”.  Now that would be a traffic hazard. Besides, the vision of Dave Bruno portraying Salvador Dali is unsettling.  I am afraid it might come across as an angry Rollie Fingers.  (Here is Dave Bruno doing …

My home is an original.  I do not object to the Rockwell statue.  However, at night the glare from the statue's display light makes it hard to see traffic or pedestrians when at the stop sign and headed West on Northway.  It asks for an accident and more tragedy for that corner. The SW corner possesses a memorial to Ava Zimmerman, the five year old girl killed in an accident when crossing the …   more ›

VIDEO: Watch Dave Bruno Play Norman Rockwell

The dedication ceremony featured local resident Dave Bruno portray Norman Rockwell in a light-hearted way. Watch a video of the ceremony.

A dedication ceremony was held for the new Norman Rockwell sculpture in the Village Center on Saturday morning. Local resident Dave Bruno put on an interesting show by portraying Rockwell and unveiling the new sculpture.  The sculpture of the 20th century illustrator, located on the southeast corner of Broad Street and Northway, was approved by the Greendale Village Board despite the Planning Commission’s rejection of it. Roy Reiman, owner of Grandhaven, has said the sculpture — which was privately paid for — has the potential to attract more visitors to the Village Center.

Norman Rockwell Sculpture Dedication on Saturday

The dedication ceremony for the new sculpture of the famous American illustrator and painter will take place Saturday morning, and be followed by live music and the open market.

A dedication ceremony will be held Saturday morning for the newly-erected Norman Rockwell sculpture in the Village Center.  Local resident Dave Bruno will, in a light-hearted way, portray Mr. Rockwell, said Anne Marie Pierce of Grandhaven. "As Norman he will say a few words and we will then unveil the statue and introduce Norman, in statue form, to all in attendance," Pierce said.  The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.  "Plan to stick around to enjoy live music, the Greendale Farmers Market on Broad Street, our extensive Norman Rockwell collection inside theGreendale Visitors Center and the many fine offerings of our Village Center Merchants," Pierce said. The sculpture of the 20th century illustrator, located on the southeast …

The sculpture is charming and so is our Village. Rob Reiman brought our Village back from death. I remember how it looked in the 1970's before it was transformed. Those newcomers claiming to know good taste may want to look at the "before" pictures.   more ›

Norman Rockwell Sculpture Erected in Village Center

The statue has the ability to be turned so the painting on Norman Rockwell's easel will change based on which direction he is facing.

A sculpture of 20th century painter and illustrator Norman Rockwell was erected in the Village Center on Wednesday. The painting on Norman Rockwell's easel will change based on which direction he is facing; the sculpture can be rotated.  The sculpture, which is placed on village property, is paid for entirely by Grandhaven, LLC.  In July the Greendale Village Board went against the Planning Commission’s recommendation, allowing Grandhaven, LLC to move forward with the privately-funded statue of Norman Rockwell. Roy Reiman, owner of Grandhaven, LLC, said the sculpture has the potential to attract more visitors to the Village Center at a board meeting. Commissioners, including Village President John Hermes, said the sculpture lacked a …

Norman Rockwell Sculpture Approved Despite Planning Commission Denial

A Norman Rockwell sculpture will be built in the Village Center after Roy Reiman made a case for the sculpture.

A sculpture of Norman Rockwell will be built in the Village Center, even though the Planning Commission recommended denial of the proposal. In a 5-1 vote Tuesday night, the Greendale Village Board went against the commission’s recommendation, allowing Grandhaven, LLC to move forward with the privately-funded statue of the famous painter and illustrator. Roy Reiman, founder of Reiman publications and owner of Grandhaven, LLC, spoke in favor of the sculpture, and said it had the potential to attract more visitors to the Village Center. “I’ve been looking for some gimmick that will attract people, especially that million market to Greendale,” said Reiman who also said the sculpture was not his idea. “We need a ‘Gotta see this in Greendale.’” …

Greendale Says 'No' to Norman Rockwell Sculpture in Village Center

Officials raise concerns about traffic safety issues and the lack of any historical ties between the famous painter and Greendale.

Visitors who come to Greendale for the first time often compare the village to a scene from a Normal Rockwell painting — a peaceful community with quaint shops, modest homes, and a white, wooden gazebo in the middle of downtown. But don't expect to see a sculpture of the famous American artist erected in the Village Center any time soon, at least not on Village property. That's because the Greendale Planning Commission Wednesday rejected an application from Grandhaven LLC. to erect a Norman Rockwell sculpture on village property. A number of commissioners questioned the placement and the historical significance of Norman Rockwell in Greendale. The sculpture of the 20th Century painter would have been placed on village property near the …

Village Reviewing Construction of a Norman Rockwell Sculpture in Village Center

Grandhaven, LLC. is requesting permission to build a Norman Rockwell sculpture, which will be a replica of the one in the Greendale Visitor Center.

The Planning Commission will review a request from Grandhaven, LLC. to build a Norman Rockwell sculpture near the intersection of Northway and Broad Street.  The sculpture will be a replica of the one in the Greendale Visitor Center. Grandhaven, LLC. is the landlord to the Village Center shops and is owned by Roy Reiman, founder of Reiman Publications. Norman Rockwell was a 20th-century American painter and illustrator. The painting on Norman Rockwell's easel will change based on which direction he is facing. The planned sculpture will have the ability to be turned. At times he may face the Village Hall so the painting will have a picture of Village Hall. If it's facing south of Broad Street then it will have a picture of the streetscape…
