A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Layton Avenue entrance ramp to celebrate the completion of the project.
A four-year long interstate project that may have given southside drivers a headache has been completed a month ahead of schedule. Officials from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, state legislators and community members gathered at the newly opened Layton Avenue entrance for a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday. The Mitchell Interchange project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. “This is a beautiful new piece of Wisconsin’s infrastructure,” said State Rep. Mark Honadel, who represents Oak Creek. “We look at this particular interchange as a gateway to our state, the front door to our state (for) all our air travelers that come in here people from the south of Illinois that come through here.” The project constructed a …

All ramps in the Mitchell Interchange are now open to traffic, as Patch's media partners at Fox 6 report. The last two ramps reopened Tuesday morning: the ramp connecting College Avenue with northbound I-94 (toward downtown Milwaukee) and the ramp from Layton Avenue to northbound I-94. Fox 6 reports that some cleanup work and striping is still needed in the Mitchell Interchange, but delays should be minimal. Work to reconstruct the interchange started back in March of 2009. Construction will continue on the I-94 north-south corridor between Milwaukee and the Illinois border through 2017. That includes a reconstruction of the Rawson Interchange next year and the Ryan Interchange in 2014.

Ramp from I-894 eastbound to I-43 northbound will reopen on Thursday, along with other ramp openings.
Motorists have been good this year - or at least since construction closed key freeway ramps in February - and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans on putting them on the 'nice' list by reopening the ramp from I-894 eastbound to I-43 northbound in the Mitchell Interchange. Drivers using the ramp to get downtown from I-894 have had to endure detours since Febraury. However, if you've been used to a left-hand exit, you'll have to change your habits, as the DOT has redesigned the ramp to have a right-hand exit. In addition, the ramp will come up on drivers sooner than before as well, so if you're an indecisive driver, you could pass it by. "If they miss it, they'll be headed south on I-94," toward Chicago, Ryan Luck, SE Freeways …

Having lived through the rebuild of the Marquette and now Mitchell Interchange for my daily work commute, my regards to the workers of both jobs. I am confused about the claim of the Mitchell being complete though as I receive almost daily e-mails about overnight closures to tunnels 1 and 2 which does impact my weekend activities at a minimum. Especially fun when the northbound Howard on-ramp is …   more ›
