Area law enforcement officials respond to Milwaukee County Sheriff's message about gun owners fighting back and "simply calling 9-1-1 and waiting is no longer your best option."
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke’s personal safety message, which called on Milwaukee County gun owners to “fight back” and take a certified gun safety course, started a media firestorm as Clarke appeared on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. However, County Executive's proposal for 2012 would cut Sheriff's Department spending by $14 million.
Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele Thursday presented a $1.2 billion budget for 2012 that freezes the property tax levy at last year's level and cuts spending by 5.6 percent. In unveiling the plan, Abele described the budget as an “honest” document that does not include any revenue from potential land sales or overly optimistic projections about earning or expenses. While he didn’t go into every detail, Abele focused on four major budget areas in county government. While the 2012 budget proposal still devotes 49 percent of spending to public safety, Abele said it’s time for the Sheriff's Department, which has seen a 62 percent funding increase since 2001, to tighten its belt. The Southeast Wisconsin Drunk Driving Task Force will deploy on Saturday night.
In the hopes of taking drunk drivers off the road, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department and 15 other agencies that are part of the Southeast Wisconsin Drunk Driving Task Force will be out in full force for the Memorial Day weekend.
