Photos: Greendale Celebrates Halloween Despite Scary Weather

Colorful, and some crazy, characters marched in the annual Halloween parade and braved the raw weather trick-or-treating.

Greendale loves parades - today was proof, as hundreds marched the streets and trick-or-treated in costume throughout the village. Though the weather was cold and damp, enthusiam was evident everywhere. Children rang door-to-door filling their bags with treats carrying umbrellas while some adults dressed in costume and decorated their yards with scary spiders, cobwebs and pumpkins.

Trick or Trollop: From scary to sexy, Halloween has been transformed for many girls

Are costumes for young girls getting too racy?

Fish nets….CHECK. Push-up bra…CHECK. Fake lashes…CHECK. High heels…CHECK. This isn’t my Halloween check list. No. My costume will consist of jeans, sweater, a glass of wine and a face full of chocolate. I will be going as an I’ll Diet Next Week Mom. ‘Why the wine?’ you may ask. Well, the vino is helpful in retaining my sanity while witnessing all the little girls who DO use the above check list. I wish I were exaggerating, but truth is there are times I feel I should be handing out condoms instead of Snickers. For females in general, Halloween has gone from spooky to slutty. Forget the Dorothy costume unless she is sportin’ 5 inch platforms and exposed cleavage. Don’t bother with the creative, humorous or – God forbid - scary outfits. If …

Shopping with our youngest for a Homecoming dress was a nightmare for that very reason. Nope, too short. Nope, too tight. Nope, too much cleavage. Finally, we found a one-shouldered dress that met the length, fit and no cleavage rule. After three torturous hours. UGH. Then it was on to shoes and why are all the sparkly shoes platform stripper shoes?! I should have just recorded myself saying "no…   more ›

Temporary Halloween Stores Can Leave Consumers With Horror Stories

Here today, gone tomorrow nature of seasonal stores can leave customers with a disappointing costume and no way to return.

Temporary costume stores like the inflatable pumpkin at State Fair Park and other Halloween boutiques pop up across the area in August, but are usually gone by Nov. 1. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is therefore advising last-minute shoppers to check the businesses out with the BBB before patronizing unfamiliar stores or websites. According to a release from the BBB, it "received 378 complaints about costume stores and websites last year. The complaints included deliveries that were late or never arrived, poor quality and difficulty obtaining refunds. Some customers found the stores closed when they returned to report a problem." “A costume may look cute and the price may seem right, but it pays to check into a site’s reputation and …

Good one, Micheal. The best way to create costumes is either go to a theatrical costumer or hit the thrift stores looking for articles of clothing that will do with some modification. Torn shirts with some old patchy jeans and som randomly played hits with flat black, flat grey, flat green and flat red spray paint did some convincing zombies. The only thing purchased at a seasonal store was the …   more ›

Halloween Walk Serves as Example for Hose Tower Community Use in Greendale

The Greendale Historical Society will be holding the second annual walk at the Hose Tower. A fundraising campaign is being prepared for the renovation of the Hose Tower.

The Greendale Historical Society offers the second annual “Halloween Walk Through The Woods,” on October 22 with interactive activities starting at the Hose Tower. The walk will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for $1 per child and the first 144 children will receive a free bag of candy.  Children in K4 through 4th grade will enjoy the interactive displays as high school chaperones escort the children along the walking path. Halloween Costumes Too Pricey? Trade Costumes or Make Your Own

Avoid buying $50 costumes this year.

Is it me or does it seem like the Halloween costume prices keep increasing every year? For the past five years I've spent no less than $50 a costume and they've been nothing fancy. Last year I went economical and made my own Princess Jasmine costume. I ended up spending more on the material and accessories. The bright side was I made my boyfriend’s Aladdin costume with less than $10. I can only imagine what it is like for families with two or more kids to dress up.  Knowing kids these days recycling costumes year after year is a no-no. Who wants to be seen in the same costume as last year? A kid's costume can cost anywhere from $20 to $50 and up at Halloween Express. I guess it takes practice and a mother’s touch to make a nice reasonably …

Halloween Express Setting Up Shop at Old Borders Building

Greendale will have a Halloween Store this season.

October seems so far away, yet so close. Halloween Express is known for temporarily leasing empty buildings. From the looks of it the Borders building on 76th Street will be housing Halloween Express this season. This year Borders announced that it close all of its stores. Another Halloween Express in New Hampshire is also using an empty Borders building. A couple of years ago Halloween Express also used the old empty Circut City building in Greenfield. In other years Halloween stores have been set up at the old Leath Furniture bulding and the old Yonkers space in Southridge Mall. Halloween Express is also filling the vacant Blockbuster on Highway 100 in West Allis, while owner John Majdoch hopes to convert his Halloween Express story on …
