Background Checks at Gun Shows and Online Gun Shows: What Do You Think?

A law that would make it mandatory for people buying guns at gun shows and online gun shows to have a background check is being debated in the Senate this week. Do you agree or disagree with the move?

Senate Republicans and Democrats seem to have reached a deal on a law that would allow background checks on private gun sales at gun shows and online gun purchases, according to a story by The Hill. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) told a reporter with TheHill.com that he didn't think background checks fell into the category of gun control.  A reporter with the New York Daily News called the deal "watered-down." But Fox News reported it is unclear whether there are enough supporting votes to pass the bill, which would require 60 votes and at least some of those votes coming from Republicans. Under current law, gun buyers who make their purchases at licensed gun dealers have to comply with background check laws, but those who buy guns at shows …

Shooting is a great recreation, also I absolutely enjoy target shooting be pellet guns or my duty weapon.... I encourage anyone against firearms to go and try it before you decide its not for you. Like Mom and Dad said. You have to try one before you decide... Some countries have mandatory military service and they all take the rifle home. The have little, to none gun crimes... Wisconsin Sees Surge in Gun Ownership

State's new conceal carry law and Sandy Hook school shooting prompts increase in calls to background check hotline, newspaper reports.

When Wisconsin's conceal carry law took effect in November 2011, gun sales in the state jumped. And the trend continued throughout 2012, according to reporting by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. A Dec. 27 story reported the background check hotline for handgun purchases has handled 60 percent more calls in 2012 over 2011. At that time, the newspaper reported, "the hotline handled 132,940 calls. For all of 2011, it received 88,895 calls." Part of that number, the Journal Sentinel reported, was a spike in interest in buying guns after the Sandy Hook school shooting, when more than 2,000 additional calls went to the hotline in the week after the shooting compared to the week before. In November, the JS reported on the steady boost in gun …

Greendale Resident Organizing 'Turn in Guns' Event

Blogger Jazon Patzfahl is looking for police departments and businesses to help coordinate an event where people can turn in guns to authorities.

Blogger Jason Patzfahl is attempting to organize "A Day To Turn In Your Gun" event, in which residents can turn in firearms to a police department with no questions asked. He first reached out to Greendale Chief Robert Malasuk asking for the department's participation. The chief declined the offer due to the political implications, Malasuk told Patch.  Patzfahl recently wrote a blog about his stance against guns and his personal experience losing a co-worker in a shooting. "If you own a gun, especially a semi-automatic weapon, hand it in to the local police," Patzfahl wrote in the blog. "They are the only ones who should have these killing machines in the first place." Even though he wanted to keep it local in Greendale, Patzfahl plans to …
