Hermes told the Village Board response times for off-duty employees must be taken into consideration by the State Legislature, and that he plans to attend the budget hearing on Thursday to say just that.
When the Wisconsin State Legislature’s Joint Committee of Finance makes its way to Greendale for a public hearing Thursday, you can expect Village President John Hermes to take his turn at the microphone. Hermes plans to ask legislators to reconsider the inclusion by Gov. Scott Walker in his biennial budget a provision that ends residency requirements for public workers. The provision, which was recently backed by Mahlon Mitchell, head of the state’s firefighters’ union, would give public workers across the state the freedom to live wherever they choose. Carl Genz and Ronald Barbian were re-elected Tuesday to the Greendale Village Board.
Greendale Village Board incumbents Carl Genz and Ronald Barbian won re-election Tuesday. According to unofficial results, Barbian tallied 41 percent of the vote (2,192 votes) while Genz had 35 percent (1,906 votes). Challenger Jason Cyborowski pulled in 23 percent (1,227 votes). Incumbents also prevailed in the race for Greendale School Board. All results are unofficial until certified by the Board of Canvassers. Barbian, 59, is a vice president at BMO Financial Group. He touted his six years of experience on the Village Board, saying the village has been able to keep taxes relatively steady during that time. An ad hoc committee suggested the village immediately clear out any hazardous materials and offer the building for sale, but officials aren't ready to do that.
Eventually, the Village of Greendale will make a move to either sell or rehabilitate the former police and fire building. But that time is not now. On March 19, the Village Board decided to ignore the recommendation from the Historic Downtown ad hoc committee suggesting the Village immediately abate hazardous materials in the building, develop a marketing strategy to try to sell the building during the Village’s 75th anniversary year and keep the building on the market for two years. Asbestos abatement would cost approximately $20,000. The building, however, qualifies for the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program, which offers a 20 percent federal tax credit for qualified rehabilitation expenses. Other than political experience, not much separates the three candidates when it comes to what they hope to see the Village accomplish in the future.
If you’re looking for a flashy candidate that has wildly different ideas from the rest of the field, you’ll have to look further than the Greendale Village Trustee race. That’s because for the most part, incumbents Ronald Barbian and Carl Genz and challenger Jason Cyborowski are on the same page. The House of Harley-Davidson will likely be allowed to offer motorcycle safety lessons in the Southridge Mall parking lot starting next month.
The Southridge Mall parking lot will likely once again be home to motorcycle training starting this April through October. On Tuesday, Village Board trustees agreed to send a proposal by House of Harley-Davidson, 6221 W. Layton Ave., Greenfield, to hold motorcycle safety training classes in northeast corner of the mall parking lot to the Village planning commission. House of Harley has used the lot the last two years. “I went to it last year and watched and they do a nice job of keeping it under controlled,” Village trustee Ronald Barbian said. The Greendale Historical Society, which has secured more than $200,000 for the renovations, is expected to be among the bidders and will likely be awarded the project.
Citing a technicality and the suggestion of the Village attorney, the Greendale Village Board decided to put the remaining construction projects needed to turn the Hose Tower / Grounds Building at 5699 Parking St., into a cultural center out for bid. The feds pay the minute you show up, not when the call is made to your home or how far you drive or where from. As for the village I'm sure pretty mush the same thing. The 15 minute rule should be more than acceptable and if it isn't and your a first responder don't take the job than or take one in the community you live in.
