School Fees Likely to Hold Steady

District administrators proposed a $5 high-school fee increase but say other school fees should remain status quo due to families' financial hardships.

Greendale school fees would mostly hold steady next year, with the exception of a $5 increase in the high school fee, under a recommendation from school district administrators. The district wants to keep the status quo because of the poor financial health of many families in the community, Director of Business Services Erin Green said in a report. The average family income in Greendale has dipped to 2002 levels and the number of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch continues to increase, she said. Greendale School District Will Not Have Fee Increases Next School Year

Staff did not recommend fee increases due to the economic hardships of Greendale families.

The Greendale School District does not plan to have fee increases for students in the 2012-13 school year.  Erin Green, director of business services, told the board on a Feb. 6 meeting that there are few reasons why fees should not increase: Over the last decade the district has gradually increased fees, except for last year. "It is clear that many families are struggling," wrote Green in a report. "I have spoken with many families this year about fees and their inability to pay them, given the lack of employment in the Milwaukee economy." I'm guessing most students that park on the village streets can't afford the parking fee. I think it's a great idea to have them do service hours to defray the cost or maybe lower the fee based on need.   more ›
