New Greendale Veterans Memorial Planned

Two local veterans groups are planning a new Greendale memorial and are eying school district property at Broad Street and Southway.

Two local veterans groups are planning a new memorial honoring Greendale veterans. Members of the American Legion Post 416 and VFW Post 10519 are eying school district land on the northeast corner of Broad Street and Southway. The groups have begun discussions with the school district and village on the project, American Legion Post Commander Tim Baranzyk said during a School Board meeting Monday. He said he was pleased with initial conversations with Superintendent John Tharp and Village President John Hermes. Plans, while still preliminary, include a kiosk that would list veterans from Greendale and allow people to view the history of each soldier, Baranzyk said.  The American Legion and VFW are currently working to set up a nonprofit …

We must and should honor our veterans for their service to our country and now to our village. This is work that should be at the front of the line of our school district and my village. Three cheers for our Village President Mr. Hermes and our School Administrator Dr. Tharp and their efforts to make this project a reality sooner rather than later.   more ›

Baseball Field Renovations To Begin After Graduation

Officials are pushing for the field to be ready in time for the 2014 season after renovations that include an artificial turf infield.

Renovations of the Brinkman baseball field are on track to begin after graduation, with the goal of getting the field ready in time for the 2014 season. The Greendale School Board on Monday approved a construction manager contract with CG Schmidt, which came in with a low bid of $27,500. CG Schmidt also managed the 2007 high school renovation project. Plans will be submitted to the village this week for board approval in June, Director of Building and Grounds Brian Koffarnus said. "Our engineering process is moving along," he said. Plans call for a turf infield and natural grass outfield, a new outfield fence and an orientation in the east-to-northeastern direction. The renovations were made possible thanks to the Reiman Foundation's …

School Board Candidate Praises Incumbents, Election Process

Kathleen Wied-Vincent, who lost in her bid for the Greendale School Board, said the election set the standard for the state.

A week after losing out in her bid for the Greendale School Board, Kathleen Wied-Vincent told board members at their meeting Monday the election set the standard for the rest of the state. "I really believe that our district set the bar higher for the state of Wisconsin on how elections should be run with integrity, with the best interest of our students in mind," Wied-Vincent said. Wied-Vincent was one of three challengers running against incumbents Tom Slota, Victoria McCormick and Melanie Kuzmanovic, who were all re-elected in the April 2 election. Katie Mevis and Roger Dalkin also ran for a spot on the board. Wied-Vincent, a 1985 Greendale High School graduate, also praised the incumbents, saying they will help the community continue …

Classy move by a classy politician who if she runs next April will be elected and get my vote. You go girl Kathleen. Keep up your volunteering and being committed to Greendale Public Schools. If I am reading this right, even the Mrs. Kuzmanovic agrees she would be terrific. She believes in our students that is for sure when I talked to her as she came to my door.   more ›

Are Online Attacks Against School District Majority Opinion? Or Vocal Minority?

Candidates for Greendale School Board discussed the frequent attacks against the school district administration and board during a candidate forum Wednesday.

Among the questions the League of Women Voters posed to School Board candidates during a forum Wednesday was one about the many negative comments frequently posted online—Greendale Patch, in particular—about school-related issues. From the resignations of a principal and outreach coordinator, to a late call to cancel school, the criticism of school district leaders is not in short supply. But do they match the general consensus of the public? Or do those comments represent the views of a minority, albeit a loud one? Most of the candidates believed it to be the latter and blasted commenters for using anonymous names. The incumbents up for re-election said they rarely get criticism through phone calls or emails—a far cry from the comment …

The six "Coffee With Community Members" were from 7:30-8:30am - I don't know about your friends, but only about 10% of my friends have to be at work before 8:30, or can come in later and stay later if they feel so obliged to attend a school-related function . . . Now back to Paul Ryan's "listening sessions" - None of which were held after 5pm, when about 95% of my friends are either still working…   more ›

School Board Approves Pay Bump For Teachers

Teacher salaries rise 3 percent under an agreement reached between the district and teachers union.

The Greendale School Board has approved an agreement with the teachers union that calls for a salary increase of 3 percent for the 2012-13 school year. The contract results in each teacher getting a total of $1,897, which is prorated for new hires and part-time employees, according to a district news release. The board approved the contract unanimously in its meeting Monday. The increase is part of Greendale's approved budget for this year. "Our teachers are among the best in the state in dedication to their students and innovation in classroom techniques and educational tools, all while adhering to the core values and standards required by our district and the state," School Board President Joe Crapitto and Superintendent John Tharp said …

I confront vague and absurd comments. Act 10 caused a loss of 10% of teacher salary for most educators. A 3% pay raise is small, but it's the max allowed by the Act 10. I hear a lot about "putting the kids first". You keep the level of professionalism and talent by paying them and that is putting the kids first. Without the professional staff the school district wouldn't continue to be high …   more ›

Health Care Law Cited In Greendale Open Enrollment Expansion

Greendale school officials said the new federal health care law is certain to increase costs, and wanted to add Open Enrollment seats at the high school to generate more revenue.

Budget uncertainty—and the new federal health care law in particular—has prompted the Greendale School District to add 14 ninth-grade seats through the state's Open Enrollment program. While the specifics of the federal Affordable Care Act are still unfolding, Greendale school officials say it's clear health costs will increase. The district expects at least a 4 percent increase in rates due to impact fees. In addition, at least 50 staff members not currently covered will obtain coverage through the school district—or else the district pays a penalty, Business Director Erin Green wrote in a memo. The district also proposed adding Open Enrollment seats because sections of some core classes may have to be added due to high class sizes, Green…

If you have to choose between teachers jobs and smaller classes/more programs and insurance? Paying them competitively or cutting some teachers to keep the primo insurance plan the high paid now Greendale teachers while they pay less for their insurance than most of us? These are the choices they are going to have to make. Another choice is to pay higher taxes.   more ›
