The Village of Greendale is considering bringing the recycling curbside pick-up in-house, and Patch checks out the rumor that the garbage service might be privatized.
Blogger Jason Patzfahl wrote last week that he heard some Greendale officials want to get out of the garbage business, and instead contract with a private company. When Patch went to the village to see if that was true, we found something a little different. Instead of garbage pickup being on officials' minds right now, it's recycling. The Village of Greendale will soon review and likely renew the refuse and recycling contract. Currently, Greendale pays a company to collect recycling from the curb every two weeks. Significant changes are being considered for the 2013 year, including having village staff pick up recycling instead of contracting it out. Village staff told Patch this could potentially save money. Three trustees voted against the project because they believed the fencing replacement should be postponed.
The Village Board approved the Department of Public Works Building Upgrade Project on Tuesday with a total cost not to exceed $421,784 with a four to three vote. The project is funded in the 2011 Annual Budget through the Capital Improvement Fund. The work will be as follow: The project looks to replace all lighting in the building with new more energy efficient equipment. Other replacements and repairs would include the windows in the front section of the building, drop ceilings in the office areas and toilet rooms, floor finishes, plumbing fixtures, painting, and part of the fencing surrounding the DPW Yard. The building will be more energy efficient and will better hide the garbage dump area.
At the Village Board meeting on Tuesday Village trustee Jim Birmingham explained to the board that the finance committee and staff is reviewing a request to upgrade the Department of Public Works building. Staff has been working with the design firm of BMR Design Group, Inc. to produce the plans, specifications and bid documents for energy efficient and other building upgrades to the Department of Public Works building. We are lucky to have a dump in the Industrial loop where we can take recycling stuff. I think it would be a good idea for our own DPW workers to pick it up. It would probably be cheaper to have our own truck.   more ›
