Update: Tony Staskunas Wins County Board Supervisor Seat

The longtime politician will replace Joe Sanfelippo, who replaced Staskunas in the State Assembly in the 15th District in the November election.

Updated 11:40 a.m. April 3 Veteran politician Tony Staskunas of West Allis has unofficially defeated entertainer and small business owner Tom Anthony of Greenfield in the race for the 17th District Milwaukee County Board Supervisor seat. Staskunas, 52, unofficially received 50 percent of the vote for a position whose constituents reside in four municipalities: Greenfield, Greendale, West Allis and Franklin. Staskunas tallied 4,452 votes to Anthony's 4,285. Some outstanding absentee ballots remain and could chip away at Staskunas' 167-vote lead. Staskunas, an attorney, has been in political office since 1988 when he was elected as alderman of West Allis, a position he held until 1997. He was then elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly 15th…

Dalkin, Kozmonovic, and Mevis for Board of Education. Ron Barbian for Village Board. Unsure, maybe Cybrowski. As someone said, elected office is not a lifetime job. 15 and 25 years is more than enough for Thomas Slota and Victoria McCormick. Think about how long they have been on the board of education.   more ›

Greendale School Board Candidates Tout Experience at Forum

While their backgrounds differ, six School Board candidates said they have something unique they can bring to the Greendale School Board.

With less than a week remaining until Tuesday's election, the six candidates vying for three positions on the Greendale School Board talked about the issues and what they would bring to the board during a forum Wednesday night. The forum contrasted two long-time incumbents in the race, Tom Slota and Victoria McCormick, with a recent appointee, Melanie Kuzmanovic, plus three residents trying to get on the school board for the first time: Roger Dalkin, Katie Mevis and Kathleen Wied-Vincent. Slota and McCormick spoke often of their long experience dealing with school district-related issues while on the school board — and, more importantly, the district's successful track record during that time. Slota, first elected in 1987, is the longest-…

Greendale Village Board Candidates Mostly on Same Page

Other than political experience, not much separates the three candidates when it comes to what they hope to see the Village accomplish in the future.

If you’re looking for a flashy candidate that has wildly different ideas from the rest of the field, you’ll have to look further than the Greendale Village Trustee race. That’s because for the most part, incumbents Ronald Barbian and Carl Genz and challenger Jason Cyborowski are on the same page. The trio is vying for a pair of available Village Board seats in the April 2 election, and about the only thing separating them is experience. Barbian is seeking a third term on the board and Genz a second; this is Cyborowski first attempt at an elected office. About 40 potential voters listened in as the three candidates weighed in on key issues facing the Village during a nearly two-hour forum in the multi-purpose room at Greendale High School …

It was a nice relief to attend a debate and not have the candidates taking jabs at each other. Instead, it was a well-mannered (sometimes funny!) debate. The candidates even stuck around afterwards to answer any questions. To me, there really wasn't any "bad" answers to the questions asked - just different ways to answer it. Each of them had good ideas. Most of those questions did not need to be …   more ›

They did get a 3% raise but that came after about a 10% cut so they are still down 7% from a year ago. Without quality teachers, we have no quality education. Instead of confrontation and quality teachers leaving a district like New Berlin, we have a relatively stable work force due to the fact that the board and the teachers for the most part have worked together. I don't know about you, but if …   more ›
