Ava Walk on Sunday had swarms of people participate in awareness of pedestrian safety. The day included speeches from Ava's family members and the Greenfield Fire Chief.
Stop in the of Love was the theme of the AVA Walk on Sunday afternoon in Downtown Greendale. The purpose of the second annual walk was to create awareness of pedestrian safety. The event is named after 5-year-old Ava Zimmerman who was struck and killed by a driver while crossing the street with her family in April 2010. Members of Ava's family, along with Greenfield Fire Chief Jon Cohn, spoke to raise awareness to educate and remind drivers that they need to stop at pedestrian crosswalks. The bronze statue, which was donated by local businesses in remembrance of Ava, stands near the spot where the crash happened. Proceeds from this year’s walk will go to Children’s Hospital Bereavement Program which supports families who have lost …

Swarms of people showed their support at the second annual AVA Walk Sunday afternoon that included speeches, interactive activities, a concert and a dance to 'Stop in the Name of Love.'
The harsh, cool wind did not dampen spirits of hundreds of supporters who came out for the second annual Walk for Ava along Broad Street Sunday afternoon. The event is named after 5-year-old Ava Zimmerman who was struck and killed by a driver while crossing the street with her family. Members of Ava's family, along with Greenfield Fire Chief Jon Cohn, spoke to raise awareness to educate and remind drivers that they need to stop at pedestrian crosswalks. Firefighters who responded to Ava's accident were also present. After the walk, participants egnjoyed music by Grace Weber, while children ate cotton candy, drew pictures and some had fun designs painted on their face. The April 22 walk is in honor of 5-year-old Ava Marie Zimmerman who was killed by a car as she crossed the street in the Village Center the morning of April 14, 2010. AVA stands for Advocating Vehicle Awareness, and the event also aims to increase pedestrian safety awareness for motorists. The event went so well last year that no major changes are planned, said event organizer and Ava’s aunt Christy Cool at Tuesday’s Village Board meeting. Xzavier Davis-Bilbo was hit by a young woman who was texting and driving last year in Milwaukee. The five-year-old boy was dragged for twenty feet and left paralyzed. Now, the U.S. Department of Transportation has released a new "Faces of Distracted Driving" video featuring Xzavier. Xzavier was a special guest during the Ava Walk in April. Five-year-old Ava Marie Zimmerman was killed by a car last year in downtown Greendale. Xzavier was on hand as the Greendale Panthers Ironman Football League team kicked off its home opener on June 18. A portion of the ticket sales as well as all of the proceeds from raffles were donated to Xzavier's family to help them purchase a wheelchair accessible van. Ava's Walk brought thousands to walk in honor of five year old Ava Marie Zimmerman, who was killed by a car last year.
The sunshine brought thousands of people to walk in honor of Ava Marie Zimmerman and to promote pedestrian safety. Participants enjoyed an afternoon of sunshine with good food and some musical entertainment.
Friends and family organized Ava's Walk in six weeks and brought over a thousand participants.
Christy Cool, Ava Marie Zimmerman's aunt and event organizer, talks about she felt Ava was watching over the walk. She also touches on how overwhelmed and grateful the family was with the high turnout.
At the kick-off ceremony a group of girls broke out in choreographed dance.
