Cop Guilty of Accidental Gun Discharge in Southridge

A Milwaukee police officer whose gun accidentally discharged in the mall last year pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

The Milwaukee police officer whose gun went off in Southrige Mall last year has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Michael Edwards, 46, was originally charged with endangering safety by use of a deadly weapon but pleaded guilty Wednesday to the reduced charge of disorderly conduct. The gunfire at the mall happened Nov. 2. Edwards told Greendale police he was was at Auntie Anne's Pretzel with his fiancee when he reached into his left back pocket for his wallet and felt his gun slide down into his pants. He reached for the gun to stop it from sliding down and it discharged. The .40 caliber gun did not have a safety and had not been secured in a holster, according to the complaint.  The complaint also said that a witness, Amanda Studebaker…

Charges Filed Against Off-Duty Police Sergeant Who Fired Gun at Southridge

Woman suffered a welt in the back of her leg from the incident.

The off-duty Milwaukee police sergeant whose gun fired inside Southridge Mall on Nov. 2 in front of Auntie Anne's Pretzel has been charged with negligent handling of a dangerous weapon, according to a criminal complaint.  Michael Edwards told Greendale police he was was at Auntie Anne's Pretzel with his fiance when he reached into his left back pocket for his wallet and felt his gun slide down into his pants. He then reached for the gun to stop it from sliding down and that's when it discharged. The . 40 caliber gun did not have a safty and had not been secured in a holster. District Attorney Reviewing Case of the Cop's Gun Fired in Southridge Mall

WISN reports that no charges have been filed.

The Milwaukee County district attorney is reviewing the case against a Milwaukee police sergeant whose gun fired inside Southridge Mall on Nov. 2 in front of Auntie Anne's Pretzel, reported WISN. The sergeant was reaching into his pocket to retrieve money while he was in line to pay on the second level of the mall. The gun was accidently discharged into the floor. No one was hurt. The district attorney told WISN that a decision on charges will be made Friday. A chairman of the Wisconsin Carry, Inc. criticized the officer and the way the situation was handled.

Updated: Gun Safety Advocate Says Gun Discharge Was Not an Accident

The chairman of the non-profit organization says it was negligence. The off-duty officer was a police supervisor.

The chairman of Wisconsin Carry, Inc. says that accidental discharge of a gun by a Milwaukee Police officer in Southridge Mall was not accident, but negligence. On Wednesday afternoon an off-duty Milwaukee Police officer's gun was accidently discharged into the floor inside Southridge Mall while reaching into his pocket to retrieve money in front of Auntie Anne's Soft Pretzels on the second level of the mall. It was only one day after the conceal and carry law went into effect that the gun was accidently discharged in a public area. Update: Off-Duty Cop Accidently Fires Gun in Southridge Mall

The officer was reaching into his pocket to buy a pretzel when the gun went off.

An off-duty Milwaukee Police officer's gun was accidently discharged inside Southridge Mall while he was shopping on Wednesday afternoon. No one was injured and nothing was damaged. The officer accidently discharged his firearm into the floor while reaching into his pocket to retrieve money in front of Auntie Anne's Soft Pretzels on the second level of the mall. The officer was standing near the register when the gun went off and the bullet hit the floor. The gun never fell to the floor, said Greendale Police Chief Bob Malasuk.
