A big Thank You to all that attended! I had fun myself, being a volunteer (there were many of us!). It was quite a sight to see all of the dignitaries show up and speak to the public. It is you, the citizens of Greendale, that make this Village so enjoyable to live in. Making the National Historic Landmark is something only you can make happen. Look for a small video clip of Wednesday's event …   more ›

Greendalers had a proud day. The real leadership of our fair village were there. Our school district had opportunities to be a part of this and choose not to. We must keep our eyes forward and remember our :Official Seal of the Village of Greendale which was designed by Marshall Bartos. The gear in the seal represents the industrial worker; the grain sheaf represents the agricultural worker; the …   more ›

Greendale’s St. Stephen Church – An Iconic Beginning!

Week #35: The picture of the parishioners outside the Tri City State Bank building is an iconic symbol of St. Stephen the Martyr Lutheran Church, Greendale’s youngest church.

History records and explains past events, while folklore preserves what people widely remember. History and Folklore! St. Stephen The Martyr Lutheran Church – 6101 S. 51st St., Greendale WI 53129 When I first visited St. Stephen the Martyr Lutheran Church to work on this story, I saw this large picture of the congregation outside the Tri City State Bank building. My immediate reaction was that this was an iconic picture. As I learned more about the church’s beginnings and its history, my fascination with the picture increased. I wondered if anyone had ever put names to all the faces, and where all of the children are today. We’ll probably never know, but that’s the fun and fascination of history, the mystery behind it all. The other thing …

Greendale – The Village That Almost Wasn’t!

Week #37: In 1935, the government's order to create three ‘Greenbelt Towns’, their selection, and the purchase of farmland for the one eventually to be called ‘Greendale’ was accomplished.

History records and explains past events, while folklore preserves what people widely remember. History and Folklore! On April 30, 1935 President Roosevelt signed the executive order authorizing the creation of ‘Greenbelt Towns’. The Resettlement Administration (RA) was created to supervise the projects. The concept was very controversial and many political, social and economic compromises had to be worked out before starting. As many as 100 cities were considered for first three communities to be built. The area southwest of Milwaukee fit the criteria established by the RA. It was near a major city (10 to 15 miles) that could provide jobs, had enough available land for purchase to accommodate developing a Village Center, shops, community …

Cheryl. I found a note saying the Highland View opened in September of 1961. That's earlier than I originally noted. That can be perhaps be verified by reading the the copies of the Village Life in September of 1961 that are stored at the Library. I'll do that when I get a chance.   more ›

1938 to 2013 – Greendale Starts Celebrating 75th Anniversary!

The most important aspect of these towns was to provide low income families with affordable housing to raise their children in a safe environment and have large open "green" spaces. In May of 1936 construction began on the 366 buildings with 572 total living units for Greendale. Public interest during the building of this planned community was phenomenal, with over a half …
