Local Photographer Seeks Funding for Greendale History Book

Steve Peters has a "then and now" Greendale photo history book ready to be printed. He just needs some financial backing.

Steve Peters has just about everything he needs to publish and print a 160-page history photo book depicting Greendale’s 75-year history. He has more all the photos he wants: 75 photos of Greendale back then, and 75 of  Greendale now.  He also has the entire book already designed and layed out. All he needs now is a little financial backing. Peters, a frequent contributor to Greendale Patch through his weekly “revisited” column, has set up an online fundraiser to raise the $4,800 he says he needs to bound and print 250 soft cover books of Greendale, Wisconsin: Then and Now. The book depicts 75 photos taken in Greendale in the 1930s, such as shots of Village Hall, original homes and downtown shops, paired up with photos taken in the exact …

A number of village, county and state representatives spoke at the event.  State Senator Mary Lazich and State Rep. Jeff Stone presented a plaque with a proclamation to the village in honor of its anniversary. Milwaukee County Board Supervisor Anthony Staskunas also presented the village with a proclamation plaque. Other speakers included Greendale Historical Society President Ted Mainella and representatives from the Wisconsin Historical Society and the National Park Service. Wednesday was just a taste of the celebration. A bulk of the festivities…

A big Thank You to all that attended! I had fun myself, being a volunteer (there were many of us!). It was quite a sight to see all of the dignitaries show up and speak to the public. It is you, the citizens of Greendale, that make this Village so enjoyable to live in. Making the National Historic Landmark is something only you can make happen. Look for a small video clip of Wednesday's event …   more ›

Greendale’s St. Stephen Church – An Iconic Beginning!

Week #35: The picture of the parishioners outside the Tri City State Bank building is an iconic symbol of St. Stephen the Martyr Lutheran Church, Greendale’s youngest church.

History records and explains past events, while folklore preserves what people widely remember. History and Folklore! St. Stephen The Martyr Lutheran Church – 6101 S. 51st St., Greendale WI 53129 When I first visited St. Stephen the Martyr Lutheran Church to work on this story, I saw this large picture of the congregation outside the Tri City State Bank building. My immediate reaction was that this was an iconic picture. As I learned more about the church’s beginnings and its history, my fascination with the picture increased. I wondered if anyone had ever put names to all the faces, and where all of the children are today. We’ll probably never know, but that’s the fun and fascination of history, the mystery behind it all. The other thing …

Greendale – The Village That Almost Wasn’t!

Week #37: In 1935, the government's order to create three ‘Greenbelt Towns’, their selection, and the purchase of farmland for the one eventually to be called ‘Greendale’ was accomplished.

History records and explains past events, while folklore preserves what people widely remember. History and Folklore! On April 30, 1935 President Roosevelt signed the executive order authorizing the creation of ‘Greenbelt Towns’. The Resettlement Administration (RA) was created to supervise the projects. The concept was very controversial and many political, social and economic compromises had to be worked out before starting. As many as 100 cities were considered for first three communities to be built. The area southwest of Milwaukee fit the criteria established by the RA. It was near a major city (10 to 15 miles) that could provide jobs, had enough available land for purchase to accommodate developing a Village Center, shops, community …

Cheryl. I found a note saying the Highland View opened in September of 1961. That's earlier than I originally noted. That can be perhaps be verified by reading the the copies of the Village Life in September of 1961 that are stored at the Library. I'll do that when I get a chance.   more ›

1938 to 2013 – Greendale Starts Celebrating 75th Anniversary!

Week #39: The partying has begun! Greendale’s 75th Anniversary year is finally here. Community organizations, churches, schools, along with the Public Celebrations and 75th Anniversary Committee have activities planned throughout the entire year.

History records and explains past events, while folklore preserves what people widely remember. History and Folklore! The story of the Greendale is truly a unique one. Three Greenbelt towns were built as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal projects following the Great Depression. They were Greenbelt, Maryland, Greenhills, Ohio and Greendale, Wisconsin. The most important aspect of these towns was to provide low income families with affordable housing to raise their children in a safe environment and have large open "green" spaces. In May of 1936 construction began on the 366 buildings with 572 total living units for Greendale. Public interest during the building of this planned community was phenomenal, with over a half …

Then has it also been looked into to see if any other UW System University bands are also available? Or how about a band formed of former Greendale High School band members, they could meet on a few weekends to practice. Also, I'm assuming that it is just a standing performance from the Badgers since it is just members and not the whole band. Oh and it's my understanding that the Highs School …   more ›
