Downtown Greendale Improvements Could Come in Many Shapes, Sizes

The Village Center ad hoc committee gathered more than two dozen ideas to improve Downtown Greendale. But any major changes likely won't come for awhile.

Would you like to see a hotel in downtown Greendale? How about an amphitheater? A family park with a fountain like that at Bay Shore Mall? All three of those ideas were among the more than two dozen discussed, analyzed and ranked by a 17-member Village Center ad hoc committee tasked at collecting ideas to improve Downtown Greendale. The committee, which was formed last August and has been bouncing ideas off one another for more than eight months, presented its final report to the Village Board of Trustees on Tuesday. Included were 26 ideas that at least some committee members thought could improve downtown. Those that seemed to have the most support from the committee were rerouting Greendale Middle School traffic patterns, hiring a …

The old police station has been sitting vacant for years and taxpayer money is being spent each year on it to heat it, etc. It's time to do something with it. It's sitting there taking up space. The key is that no one wants to buy it and develop it.   more ›

New Greendale Veterans Memorial Planned

Two local veterans groups are planning a new Greendale memorial and are eying school district property at Broad Street and Southway.

Two local veterans groups are planning a new memorial honoring Greendale veterans. Members of the American Legion Post 416 and VFW Post 10519 are eying school district land on the northeast corner of Broad Street and Southway. The groups have begun discussions with the school district and village on the project, American Legion Post Commander Tim Baranzyk said during a School Board meeting Monday. He said he was pleased with initial conversations with Superintendent John Tharp and Village President John Hermes. Plans, while still preliminary, include a kiosk that would list veterans from Greendale and allow people to view the history of each soldier, Baranzyk said.  The American Legion and VFW are currently working to set up a nonprofit …

We must and should honor our veterans for their service to our country and now to our village. This is work that should be at the front of the line of our school district and my village. Three cheers for our Village President Mr. Hermes and our School Administrator Dr. Tharp and their efforts to make this project a reality sooner rather than later.   more ›

Greendale Student Earns Perfect ACT Score

Kirstan Brodie is part of a tiny group of students—less than one-tenth of 1 percent of who take the ACT—who got a perfect score.

Greendale High School junior Kirstan Brodie has joined an elite group of students who attained a perfect score on the ACT test. Brodie earned the top composite score of 36, according to a district news release. Less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. Among test-takers in the high school graduating class of 2012, only 781 of more than 1.66 million students earned a composite score of 36. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. Brodie is the daughter of Kent and Robin Brodie.

How Many Students Did Southeastern Wisconsin Schools Suspend Last Year?

Patch's searchable database allows users to find the number of students suspended in 2011-12 at an individual school within districts in the Milwaukee area.

Schools across Wisconsin report statistics on suspensions and expulsions to the Department of Public Instruction, which in turn compiles them and publishes data by school and grade level. In 2011-12, 5.21 percent of students statewide were suspended at least once during the year. It’s the lowest percentage since data was kept beginning in 1998-99, and the figure has dropped five consecutive years. Patch’s searchable database includes suspensions by school and grade in 2011-12 for Cooperative Educational Service Agency (CESA) 1, which covers most of southeast Wisconsin, including Racine Unified School District.

As most should already know, it should be noted that if a fight occurs both students are suspended even if one student doesn't fight back or just covers up to protect himself. While I support zero tolerance the aggressor should be suspended and if the victim is truly innocent, suspension may not be appropriate. Makes the stats somewhat unreliable.   more ›

Emergency Text Alerts Not Reaching Most People on UW Campuses

Investigation finds that vast majority of students and faculty at University of Wisconsin campuses — including Milwaukee — are not signed up for program that provides public safety updates.

On March 5, University of Wisconsin-Madison junior Eric Cardinal was working the late shift at a Shell station near campus when he read a text alert from the university warning of a suspected shooter on the loose: “Police looking for Male/Black wearing red & black flannel shirt headed west out of University Houses.” Then Cardinal saw a man in his store duck, as a police car rolled through the parking lot.  “That’s when I assumed he was one of the suspects they were looking for,” Cardinal said. In the wake of campus shootings the past five years, police throughout the nation are using text alerts to deliver warnings and advice to students in emergency situations. The concise messages from the Safety Awareness For Everyone system are …

Baseball Field Renovations To Begin After Graduation

Officials are pushing for the field to be ready in time for the 2014 season after renovations that include an artificial turf infield.

Renovations of the Brinkman baseball field are on track to begin after graduation, with the goal of getting the field ready in time for the 2014 season. The Greendale School Board on Monday approved a construction manager contract with CG Schmidt, which came in with a low bid of $27,500. CG Schmidt also managed the 2007 high school renovation project. Plans will be submitted to the village this week for board approval in June, Director of Building and Grounds Brian Koffarnus said. "Our engineering process is moving along," he said. Plans call for a turf infield and natural grass outfield, a new outfield fence and an orientation in the east-to-northeastern direction. The renovations were made possible thanks to the Reiman Foundation's …

University of Wisconsin Brass Caught in Crosshairs

Controversies over the $648 million reserve fund and the $600,000 Palermo's Pizza deal are bedeviling University of Wisconsin leaders.

It’s hard not to feel a bit sorry for Rebecca Blank, incoming chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Sure, the acting U.S. commerce secretary, set to start in July, will make $500,000 a year — plus benefits and perks, including a university residence and car, money for travel and entertainment, and an unpaid academic appointment for her husband. But she’ll be stepping into a host of controversies, drawing flak from all directions. As one UW-Madison student quipped, “Blank is not starting off with a blank slate.” There’ll be ongoing fallout from some legislators’ volcanic eruptions over revelations that the UW System has a $648 million reserve fund. Though this is in line with other state systems, Wisconsin politicians are “…
