The Greendale Review Newspaper - Revisited Week 9 - 12/1/38 to 12/15/38

The Greendale Review was Greendale's first newspaper and through 2013 I will post stories every Thursday from the early days of Greendale taken from the paper.

With this year being the 75th anniversary I thought it might be interesting as well as fun to look back at Greendale’s beginnings from the viewpoint of its own residents and local news stories of the day. Every Thursday through the end of the year, I will be posting humorous, relevant or just interesting stories from Greendale’s original newspapers.

The following selected stories are copied exactly as they were originally written (including some misspellings) unless otherwise noted. Some may be shortened with “…”. They will be in bold and italicized type.

Also, just a reminder - Greendale first opened to residents on May 1, 1938

FIRES

Find out what's happening in Greendalewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

The burning of rubbish is not allowed within the village. Many small fires have been started out-of-doors recently by children, and the cooperation of the parents is needed to eliminate these.

Speaking of fires, too many false alarms have been turned in recently. Again the villagers are asked to keep a check on the situation.

 BROKEN WINDOWS

Numerous windows have been broken in homes that are still unoccupied. No doubt, among our escapades, we can recall “that broken window”. And it has been our experience that we had to pay for it.

Parents please explain to your youngsters that each window pane costs about 65c, and that they are liable for the ones they break.

TEST DRAWS NATIONAL ACCLAIM

Greendale has attained national publicity on the tests made by Mr. Walter Kroening, Assistant Manager, on asphalt tile water floor waxes.

All of you, no doubt, did see the display in the west lobby of the Village Hall which contained results of testing 165 floor waxes.

These waxes were tested for wear, non-skid qualities, water resistance, water spotting and carnauba wax content. The twelve best waxes were chosen from this array, which represented waxes submitted by all of the wax manufacturers in the United States.

CARE OF STORM DOORS

The placing of milk bottles, bread deliveries and other articles between the storm door and the house door should be discontinued since these articles hold storm doors open, allowing the wind to catch them. Even though the combination doors are held by heavy chain door-checks, a strong wind can do severe damage to the door. In the past few weeks quite a number of doors have been torn from the hinges by high velocity winds. Your cooperation in the matter is urged.

BENGS APPOINITED POSTMASTER

Community Manager Reeder announced that he had been advised by the Post Office officials in Washington that Edward E. Bengs of 5608 Badger Court, was to be appointed Greendale’s first Postmaster. It was learned that while Mr. Bengs has not as yet received his commission, he has been informed by the Post Office Department that he was to receive the appointment. …

… While the equipment for the new Post Office will not be installed for some time, Mr. Reeder stated that temporary arrangements would be made for the use of the Post Office Building as soon as the office is formally established, which he expects will be within the next several weeks. …

REMOVE ALL SCREENS

A number of screens are still in place through-out the village. Such screens should be taken down as soon as possible. Leaving them in place will result in early deterioration, undue swelling, and warping. The Management cannot be responsible for damage caused to screens due to neglect.

 WHY?

All those papers blowing around?

Doesn’t the tavern open?

Ditto the drug store?

Ditto the post office?

Another false alarm?

All this fresh air going to waste?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING!!

Residents are warned NOT to deposit bottles or glass of any shape or form in the orange bottom can. The incinerator was almost wrecked last week by bottles placed in the orange bottom can, by unthinking residents.

Please use the proper receptacle when depositing rubbish.

CURFEW FOR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY BULDING

Well folks, the Management found it necessary to put some restriction on the use of the School and Community Building and a warning bell will be sounded at 10:15p.m.: the final bell will ring at 10:25p.m., and by 10:30p.m. all lights will be out and the building locked up.

This rule applies to all groups and organizations, so plan to finish that important business before 10:25p.m. It will give us all a chance to get home at a decent hour and hit the hay!

MR. HAUSER AT WORK

In passing the canvas windbreaker surrounding the flag pole base, located in the center of the mall, the sound of “Lonnie” Hauser’s drill could be heard. Peeking through a corner we saw “Lonnie” working diligently and were amazed at the progress in his work. The small model we gazed at during the summer is coming to life! We eagerly anticipate seeing the four adult aspects of our Community Life in completion, which are represented on the flagpole base.

FIREATERS

A busy place to visit, Saturday afternoons, is the firehouse. Talk about ambitious firemen! Everything is cleaned, spick and span! Duties are assigned to each man, and work is carried out in the best of spirit and co-operation. It is indeed, a credit to Greendale to have such a splendid Fire Department.

The Firemen and Co-ops are sponsoring a dance, Saturday, December 17, to raise funds for the community tree and decorations. Let’s turn out in grand style; a swell dance for a good cause.

Mr. Warren Hale and Mr. Paul Kegal are in charge.

CINEMA

The talkies “So This is Arizona”, featuring Wally Wales, a comedy “Music Friend”, and a travelogue about Norway will be shown in the Community Building on Sunday, December 18, at 2:30p.m. This will be the last matinee until after the Holidays.

… Mr. Bowen, of the Dental Committee, reported that a man had been selected for our dentist and that as soon as the office was equipped, he would come to Greendale.
