The Greendale Review Newspaper - Revisited Week 18 - 3/25/39 to 4/8/39

The Greendale Review was Greendale's first newspaper and through 2013 I will post stories every Thursday from the early days of Greendale taken from the paper.

With this year being the 75th anniversary I thought it might be interesting as well as fun to look back at Greendale’s beginnings from the viewpoint of its own residents and local news stories of the day. Every Thursday through the end of the year, I will be posting humorous, relevant or just interesting stories from Greendale’s original newspapers.

The following selected stories are copied exactly as they were originally written (including some misspellings) unless otherwise noted. Some may be shortened with “…”. They will be in bold and italicized type.

FIREATERS

On Saturday, March 11, the firemen answered a call on Job No. 42. The promptness with which the fireaters presented themselves, prevented what might have been considerable damage to the barn. Incidentally, on this particular occasion, the fireaters initiated their gas masks.

NOTICE

Allotment gardens will be available just as soon as the work of draining and laying drain tile is completed. This work will be finished well in advance of planting time. Of course, your garden will be fertilized and tilled, ready for planting.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIAMOND TO BE BUILT

A temporary baseball diamond will be constructed at Southway and Broad Streets. It will be regarded and smoothed out in time for early practice.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOME GARDENS

If you wish to be in harmony with the plan to make Greendale beautiful, consult with Mr. Stange about your flower and vegetable gardens. He has available many plans for the different yards.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

REMINDER TO RESIDENTS

If you intend to construct walks, trellises, pergolas, temporary fences, doghouses, or play apparatus, it is requested that you consult with Mr. Kroening, Assistant federal Manager, before proceeding with personal improvements.

He has on file many fine and approved plans for these items.

It is required that all tenants receive permission before any improvements to the grounds are made. This rule is a term of your lease. Many improvements of this nature already made will have to be removed.

Be on the safe side! Have your plans approved.

FIRST TELEVISION PICTURE

NEW YORK – Amos ‘n’ Andy, famed blackface comedians, made television history at the New York World’s Fair when they played the stellar roles in the first experimental television pickup of a commercial radio program. This is how they appeared on the television screen. (see photo) Incidentally, that’s Amos on the left. Later Mr. Whalen was interviewed on the national broadcast of the comedians.

SPORTING GOSSIP

The Dart Ball League is now under way. Results to date are as follows: Credit Union 9 hits, 3 runs. Forum 8 hits, 1 run. This game was played Wednesday, March 8.

On Wednesday, March 15, a double header took place between the Settlers and the Credit Union. In the first game, the Settlers won with a tenth inning rally. Irv. Zillmer, the hero, scored a home run to win 2 to 1. In the second game the Credit Union conquered the Settlers 4 to 2. The Credit Union collected 7 and 11 hits, the Settlers 8 and 9 hits.

The fourth team, known as the Cooperative must withdraw because time will not permit o carry out their end of the schedule. A new team will be entered in their place. We regret the withdrawal of this team as their lineup consisted of a splendid group of fellows. Games will be played every Wednesday evening, starting at 7:30, through April 12. The leading hitters: Ray Miller, .500; L. Liedtke, .421; G. Wesoschnick, .400; G. Brent, .400’

At the election of village officials April 4, George Brinkman, incumbent, won over his opponent, Herman Mittag, by a wide margin, the final count being 318 to 112.

THIS OUGHT TO GET ‘EM UP!

Walter E. Kroening, Assistant Manager, has filed a requisition for a new fire siren which has a two mile radius and is of the same type used in most volunteer departments in Milwaukee county.

It will be installed on a ten foot tower on top of the fire house, sometime in April.

Residents near the fire house need not be concerned about the greater intensity and range of sound of this siren because it is so designed and built that the sound has uniform intensity within its radius.

DO NOT BURN LAWNS, WARNING!

The burning of lawn areas to rid them of dead grass and other debris will destroy many grass plants. The intense heat will injure the plant crowns and roots with the result that it will require several months to raise a satisfactory and substantial turf. …

FIRST CHECK ISSUED

Wednesday night, April 5, the first check of the Village of Greendale was signed. This followed approval by the village board of vouchers, sent in by vendors for services rendered.

The check was signed by Henry Radke, trustee; Helen Arndt, clerk; George Brinkman, president.

FARM WORK DELAYED

According to max Sievers, who is in charge of the rural area, work on the farms within the project has been somewhat delayed because of weather conditions.

“There is still frost in the ground,” Said Mr. Sievers, “and it will be a week or ten days, even with the best of weather, before work can be started.”

Last year the work was started as early as March 20 and by this time farmers already had small grains seeded.

ORIGINAL MODEL HOME OCCUPIED BY NELEZENS

The dream home of thousands has become a reality for Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nelezen and their family. They are making their home in the one-time model house at 5503 Acorn Court, through which endless throngs of interested people passed for many months; throngs that in the main admired and approved the well planned details and the modern arrangement of rooms.

The Nelezens moved into Greendale March 1 from North Humboldt Avenue, Milwaukee. Mr. Nelezen is a salesman.

They are happy in the new home, which they have furnished so beautifully  and arranged very tastefully.

A most hearty welcome to the Nelezen family from their neighbors on the Court and from the residents of Greendale.
