The Greendale Review Newspaper - Revisited Week 13 - 2/11/39

The Greendale Review was Greendale's first newspaper and through 2013 I will post stories every Thursday from the early days of Greendale taken from the paper.

With this year being the 75th anniversary I thought it might be interesting as well as fun to look back at Greendale’s beginnings from the viewpoint of its own residents and local news stories of the day. Every Thursday through the end of the year, I will be posting humorous, relevant or just interesting stories from Greendale’s original newspapers.

The following selected stories are copied exactly as they were originally written (including some misspellings) unless otherwise noted. Some may be shortened with “…”. They will be in bold and italicized type.

Also, just a reminder - Greendale first opened to residents on May 1, 1938

Garden Club News

Garden enthusiasts were treated to a “double feature” at the third meeting of the Garden Club held February 2. Mr. Max Sievers, superintendent of farms, spoke on vegetable gardens, and Mr. Harold Mason showed two moving pictures obtained from the University of Wisconsin.

Mr. Sievers gave directions for preparing the soil and planting seed in a vegetable garden. Fifty by fifty gardens will be available at $1 a season in the following localities: Grange Ave., the East end of Schoolway, and south of Clover Lane and Catalpa. …

… The best way to prevent rabbits from chewing the bark off shrubs and trees is to wrap well with tar paper, advised Mr. Strange. …

… Mr. Mason, of the program committee, announced that meetings are open to all residents of Greendale, the club is not a “closed affair”, and there is no admittance fee. At the next meeting, February 16, the program committee hopes to present a speaker.

The management again requests the co-operation of all Greendale residents in the proper care of garbage receptacles, and in their conforming to regulations pertinent to refuse collection.

M. D.’s Move Into M. T. Office; M. D. Sign Replaces M. T.

If, as a casual visitor, you should venture near the offices of Dr. Lomas, Dr. Fisher and Dr. Dvorak over the new post office, the good doctors will seize upon you and conduct you with all the joy of newly-weds through their splendid offices.

Dr. Dvorak’s pet is the well equipped X-ray room in which our landlord provided absolutely light-proof curtains, a 300 watt lamp, lead lined floors and walls, special high power electric cables, and a fine dark room for developing the X-ray negatives. …

… Venetian blinds on all windows, (not just in front), and hot and cold running water in every one of the various rooms are two more points the doctors exhibit on the tour.

Dr. Lomas has all modern equipment in good looking cream, black and chromium combination. …
