The Greendale Review Newspaper - Revisited Week 11 - 12/29/38 to 1/14/39

The Greendale Review was Greendale's first newspaper and through 2013 I will post stories every Thursday from the early days of Greendale taken from the paper.

With this year being the 75th anniversary I thought it might be interesting as well as fun to look back at Greendale’s beginnings from the viewpoint of its own residents and local news stories of the day. Every Thursday through the end of the year, I will be posting humorous, relevant or just interesting stories from Greendale’s original newspapers.

The following selected stories are copied exactly as they were originally written (including some misspellings) unless otherwise noted. Some may be shortened with “…”. They will be in bold and italicized type.

Also, just a reminder - Greendale first opened to residents on May 1, 1938

New Postoffice Starts With a Rush

That the Management turned over the postal service to Mr. Bengs and his assistants at a most auspicious time, is clearly evidenced by the amount of mail handled since its opening.

We wager that the lobby of the Village Hall and perhaps, even Mr. Reeder’s office would have been overflowing, with Christmas mail and packages, had not the Postoffice been ready at this time; to say nothing of the wear and tear on the office girls.

It is interesting to note that Mr. Bengs, our new Postmaster, received about 1500 requests for canceled stamps, some of these coming from as far distant points as Japan and Asia.

The opening of the Post Office is another step toward the completion of Greendale’s business life, and we are looking forward to the opening of the rest of our business section.

Radio Interference

Recently a number of complaints have been received at the Management office about interference in radio reception. Investigation of these reports has revealed that in many cases the cause was a light bulb being loose in a socket or other forms of poor electrical connection, such as to electric irons, vacuum cleaners, toasters, etc. Each of these miniature broadcasting stations sends out man-made static. In some instances Radio interference was traced to large electric motors installed in some garages. Your reporting such motor installations to the Management will help to correct the situation. In other cases the entire difficulty was due to the need of a new tube in the radio itself. …

Postmaster Bengs Asks Your Cooperation in the Distribution of Mail

Mothers, if you call for your mail at the post office between 2 and 3 o’clock, please do not send your children in after school to ask for the mail again. There has been a great deal of confusion in the post office due to this problem. Please send in just one member of the family to get the mail.

If you have relatives living with you, or visiting, please register both names at the post office under your address.
