Greendale Patch Super Bowl Blog

Contributor Alex Tomter shares his game reactions.

I feel pretty confident in saying that the wait for kickoff on Sunday was excruciatingly long for all Packers fan, wherever you were watching.

Pre-Game

Fox did fans no favors with their pre-game choices either, as many of us actually sat through the painful interview that Bill O’Reilly put President Barack Obama through. The interview, which probably was very interesting, seemed out of place and unnecessary as a lead into the Super Bowl and in my opinion provided nothing but a buzz kill to the excitement of the big game.

After I finally got over sitting through the interview and got my mind back on the game, it was time for the national anthem. Just the National Anthem and then it was time for the kick-off!

Honestly, I was excited about Christina Aguilera singing the Star Spangled Banner, she has a great voice and I thought she could do the song justice. Boy was I wrong… I was so thrown off by how long it took her to sing it that I didn’t even realize she screwed up the words until hearing about it later.

(Note to future Super Bowl anthem singers: Make it about the song and its meaning to America, not about you or your voice.)

Now on to the game…

The first quarter was a blast. After barely missing on a huge play on the first possession, the Packers connected on a great touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson, 7-0!

Before I could even stop giving high fives from the touchdown, Ben Roethlisberger had his arm hit and threw a “wobbler” up for grabs that Nick Collins came down with and ran back for another touchdown!!! 14-0!!

I had no doubts in my mind, the Steelers were a good enough team to come back from the deficit but being up 14 points in the Super Bowl is usually a great sign!

The second quarter was a roller coaster ride. The Pack had highs, including a Jarrett Bush interception that led to a Rodgers to Jennings touchdown. But they also had some lows; more drops, key players going down, and surrendering a touchdown right before half that seemed to be a big momentum swinger.

Halftime was here Packers led 21-10, but the mix of injuries as well as the late Steelers’ score made the lead seem like much less.

Halftime Show: As you might be able to tell, I’m not a big fan of the non-football part of the Super Bowl. I tried to give the Black Eyed Peas a chance, but when Fergie began her rendition of “Sweet Child of Mine” with Slash by her side, I had to walk away. So I’m really not the best person to ask about the performance.

Back to football…

Does anybody really want to relive the third quarter? We found out Charles Woodson broke his collar bone and was out for the game, the Packers didn’t score a point, our receivers dropped anything thrown towards them, and the Steelers cut the lead to four. If you were watching the game with Packers fans, it probably was an ugly half hour to 45 minutes with lots of anger in the room.

On to the fourth…

The final quarter started out almost as perfectly as it could have. Clay Matthews forced a fumble picked up by Desmond Bishop and the Pack had a chance to extend their lead. It took a couple of minutes, but Rodgers again hooked up with Jennings for a touchdown to go back up by 11.

The Lombardi Trophy was close to coming home, but I still couldn’t help but feel uneasy. That feeling turned out to be correct as the Steelers drove down the field for a touchdown and then used a creative two-point conversion play to make it just a three point game.

There were about seven minutes remaining and it seemed like the Packers needed to score or the Steelers would win. The Packers used five and a half minutes worth of clock time and just missed on a touchdown pass that would have clinched the game, but they settled for a field goal to put them up by six.

Up by six points with the so-called clutch Roethlisberger coming onto the field; nerves were definitely tight for Packers fans. However, after a 15 yard completion to start the drive, the Steelers did nothing and on 4th and 5, Roethlisberger fired an incomplete pass! THE PACKERS HAD WON THE SUPER BOWL!

It was all worth it, the excruciatingly long pre-game show, the blunder filled national anthem, the horrible half time show, and the scariest third quarter of my life WERE ALL WORTH IT! THE PACKERS WERE WORLD CHAMPIONS!
