Remodeling Ahead of Schedule at Highland View Elementary

District administrators expect Highland View to be ready by first day of classes.

The two new classrooms at Greendale's are close to being finished.

That's good news for the school's teachers and students as the first day of school, September 1, is just two weeks away.

School Superintendent Bill Hughes reported at the August 15 school board meeting that the work is several days ahead of schedule. Hughes said that is in large part due to collaboration with Greendale Village officials to rush through the necessary building permits and waive all associated fees.

Hughes went on to tell the school board that construction firm J.P. Cullen is doing 'good work' and that the $80K cost of the project will be paid out of the district's maintenance and facilities budget.

The renovation involves turning the school's computer lab and part of the library into two additional classrooms that will each house a fifth grade class.

In addition, the school will now have dedicated classrooms for both Spanish and Reading classes. The Reading room will be upstairs in what was third grade teacher Karyl Tutaj's room last year and the Spanish room will now be next to the art room.

The renovation is the result of a lengthy process undertaken by school administrators and a committee of community members to address overcrowding at the school.

Over the summer, the school board voted to go with the current less expensive solution based on the fragile economy and uncertain state funding to schools.

Students and families will get their first look at the new classrooms when they attend the school's "MID Night" event from 5:30-7pm on Tuesday, August 30. The event allows students to find out who their teacher will be for the upcoming school year as well as drop off school supplies and find out where their new classroom will be.
