New Greendale Veterans Memorial Planned

Two local veterans groups are planning a new memorial honoring Greendale veterans.

Members of the American Legion Post 416 and VFW Post 10519 are eying school district land on the northeast corner of Broad Street and Southway.

The groups have begun discussions with the school district and village on the project, American Legion Post Commander Tim Baranzyk said during a School Board meeting Monday. He said he was pleased with initial conversations with Superintendent John Tharp and Village President John Hermes.

Plans, while still preliminary, include a kiosk that would list veterans from Greendale and allow people to view the history of each soldier, Baranzyk said.Β

The American Legion and VFW are currently working to set up a nonprofit organization, fundraise for the project and nail down the site, he said.
