Bullying Takes Center Stage at Film Screening Wednesday

An award-winning documentary will be shown as part of an ongoing effort to combat bullying in Greendale schools.

The award-winning documentary "Bully" will be shown at Greendale High School Wednesday night as efforts to combat bullying in district schools continue.

The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. The event features an appearance by former Packer Gilbert Brown.

A nonprofit group, Greendale Against Bullying, is sponsoring the event. The group formed after a 17-year-old made a bomb threat during homecoming week and later told police he wanted to disrupt homecoming activities due to prolonged bullying.

The Greendale School District also formed a task force focused on culture and climate issues in schools. The group made several recommendations earlier this year.

The district made recommendations but didn't want to join forces with the GAB group. Funny, a community of Greendale parents, businesses, and students start a community based group and Dr. Tharp doesn't want the district to get involved and join forces. Lets leave our bully problem up to each school and their parent groups to handle- so proactive

Greendale Against Bullying is doing a great job and deserves our support. Clearly, this group is filling the gaps the District chooses to ignore.

Funny thing- Name calling is form of bullying, Roxy. Sometimes, a kid or group simply has to learn how to blend in and/or defend itself. How come you rail on the district and its staff when they want you to do something, yet, you scream on them when they do not do that which you wish? Bully or baiter?

The district hasn't ignored the bullying issue at all. There was the anti-bullying task force that met and was led by both community and staff leadership. The report they put out was well written and had actionable measures that each school could take. The schools spoke of this and made it available for parents to see. GAB is a great group that was formed and is a great extension of our schools and families.
Here is a link to the task force and the reports if you think that no one did anything: http://www.greendale.k12.wi.us/12-13/task-force.html

The district had to be pushed to get the task force started. Board members and Tharp blocked working with the founders of GAB. If I remember right one of the district strategies is to put on skits.
Greendale Against Bullying is taking the bull by the horns and doing something proactive. Glad citizen activists are watching the Greendale School District.

Frominthebubble - no name calling here. Just fact. they were asked to join forces with the GABnow and didn't. They started the task force after approched by GAB. Report given yes - no further action taken. Didn't work with the efforts by GAB for last nights event infact charged the group $400+ for use of the building and then Tharp wanted to speak. So when they do something I will be the first to step up and help them. On another note to say that a child has to "learn to fit in" or "defend themself" shows me how clueless you are to what kids that are being bullied face. Suggestion watch the movie - and tell me those kids should have tried harder or done something different. I feel sick to my stomach that a parent (assuming you are)would say kids need to try harder to fit in when they are on a daily basis being told they are loosers, ugly, have no friends, stupid, ignored or laughed at and taunted by others to be the butt of a joke....how can they try harder. How about believing them when they say they are being bullied. The lets shake hands and say I am sorry version doesn't work - there is more to it then that.

Roxy- Your point on the kids in the movie is made, understood and accepted. Thank you.

We can look up to see who signed a recall of their elected official because of grievances, but weRead More cannot look up who donated large wads of ca$h to the same official's campaign...Thank you GOP for turning that window of open accountability into a one-way mirror with the GOP looking out and everyone else stuck looking inward, wandering why we don't get the same vantage point. A bit hypocritical don't you think? And BTW, your GOP budget just ticked off every principal, superintendent and public school family in the state of WI today. Good luck on that second term of negative growth (-0.74).

I think Scott Walker's record speaks for itself in terms of state job growth and misplacedRead More priorities. "Blue fisters" didn't create Scott Walker, he's been a creature of ALEC since the early 1990s. Let's see if he decides to do a Bachmann in 2014. A lot of people who didn't vote in the recall election because they didn't understand/agree may not have voted for him in 2010. Anyone who has a 20-something college grad who can't find a job, male spouse, family member or friend in their 50s who can't find a job, was cut from needed health care benefits, etc., is bound to be looking for better leadership.
