Greendale Walmart Celebrates Opening

The long-awaited Greendale Supercenter Walmart finally opened Wednesday after more than two years of discussion and work. 

Village officials, Walmart representatives and shoppers gathered today in celebration of the opening that included a Star-Spangled Banner performance, Martin Luther cheer squad performance, Veterans of Foreign Wars Color Guard, product sampling and giveaways. 

The new , it comes inbetween the 154,000-square-foot Greenfield Supercenter on Highway 100 and the 40,000-square-foot West Allis Neighborhood Market.

The new store features family apparel health and beauty aids, electronics, toys, garden items, jewelry, automotive products, home furnishings, hardware, sporting goods, pet supplies and housewares.

The grocery area will include a wide selection of fresh produce, including a variety of organic products. Other features include a bakery, meat and dairy products, dry goods and staples, beverages, a deli, frozen foods, canned and packaged goods, baking items and household supplies.

Walmart has donated about $5,000 in grants to area organization Greendale Police Department, Greendale Public Library and Greendale Schools.

The new building was built at the old U.S. Bowling Congress site. Before construction the property was valued at $4 million. Village officials have said that since the site is not a TIF District once development is done the value of the property would go up to $10 million or more, improving the village’s tax base.

Discussions about Walmart started in late 2010. The Village approved the construction in June 2011. 

The average wage at Walmart for full-time hourly associates in Wisconsin is approximately $12.54 per hour, according to a press release from Walmart.
