Village Board Approves Malasuk's Salary

Board agrees to pay less than the village manager's recommendation.

The Greendale Village Board approved a compensation package Tuesday for Robert Malasuk, the village's new police chief.

Malasuk, who was appointed to the post in June by the Police and Fire Commission, will make $87,500 a year, according to village president John Hermes, who confirmed the amount Friday morning.

Malasuk, who will also receive benefits from the village, does not have a contract with the village.

The salary approved by the Board was less than the recommended amount put forth by village manager Todd Michaels, according to Hermes.

To determine the salary, Hermes said, the village manager examined police chief salaries in area villages comparable to Greendale and took into account historical salary ranges of Greendale's police chiefs.

The village manager also compared all salaries within the village, Hermes added.

"The village manager comes up with a recommendation and the board can choose to go with that recommendation or a sum of their own," Hermes said.  "The Village Board is excited to have this process behind us and a new chief in place who is ready to lead this department forward."

Malasuk, who was a captain and interim chief for the department, replaces Robert Dams, who retired in December. The police and fire commission went through an extensive nationwide search this spring to fill the position.

"We are very pleased that it turned out that it was Malasuk. The commission had a significant amount of interest," said Village Trustee Ron Barbian. "Malasuk knows Greendale and he has been here a long time. He's a good guy."

Malasuk has been with the Department for 24 years, 12 of those in a supervisory capacity.

Malasuk has experience as a patrol officer, a detective and as a member of the SWAT Team.  He has extensive grant-writing experience as well as understands the budget process and issues in the Village, said David Wilmoth, president of the commission, in June.
