Tammy Baldwin Hits the Phones During Stop in Greendale

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate calls on the help of volunteers to help her in tightly contested races.

With only day away from the election, U.S. Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin was hitting the phones Monday at a Greendale home set up for canvassers.

Baldwin was personally making calls to volunteer canvassers to ask for their help tomorrow as she goes up against former Gov. Tommy Thompson.

“One of the conversations I had melted my heart,” Baldwin said. “She was so excited. She was at the Obama rally in Milwaukee and couldn’t believe we were having a conversation.”

Tom Spehert, owner of the home were the canvass took place, said he volunteered to let his house be used because he is committed to getting Tammy Baldwin and President Barack Obama elected.

The campaign approached Spehert about using his home as a canvassing office because during the Scott Walker recall they realized that working out of an office was too noisy to make phone calls.

Spehert said his opened up his home as a canvassing location at 9 a.m. Saturday and will continue throughout the day Tuesday.

“This is unique, but also comfortable for the volunteers to just be in a home setting and getting out the vote,” Baldwin said. “You could hear all the conversations going on. People are excited. This is what elections are all about. Getting communities out and talking to your neighbors.”

Within the past month of the campaign, numbers have drawn to a near dead heat, with perhaps a slight edge toward Baldwin.  In a Marquette University Law School poll released last week, the final one before the election, Baldwin had a 4-point edge on the former governor.

When asked what’s the key to beating Thompson, Baldwin said: “Part of it is my record to standing up to the powerful interest in my time in office on behalf of  hard working families. People are recognizing that Tommy Thompson was working for those same special interest the recent years… That’s part of the equation.”

We can look up to see who signed a recall of their elected official because of grievances, but weRead More cannot look up who donated large wads of ca$h to the same official's campaign...Thank you GOP for turning that window of open accountability into a one-way mirror with the GOP looking out and everyone else stuck looking inward, wandering why we don't get the same vantage point. A bit hypocritical don't you think? And BTW, your GOP budget just ticked off every principal, superintendent and public school family in the state of WI today. Good luck on that second term of negative growth (-0.74).

Jason- See the IRS for list of donors to pro republican groups. They were illegally collected andRead More distributed. You signed the recall, no one made you do it. Deal with it already and stop changing the subject to interject some off the wall non comparison. ~in solidarity

I think Scott Walker's record speaks for itself in terms of state job growth and misplacedRead More priorities. "Blue fisters" didn't create Scott Walker, he's been a creature of ALEC since the early 1990s. Let's see if he decides to do a Bachmann in 2014. A lot of people who didn't vote in the recall election because they didn't understand/agree may not have voted for him in 2010. Anyone who has a 20-something college grad who can't find a job, male spouse, family member or friend in their 50s who can't find a job, was cut from needed health care benefits, etc., is bound to be looking for better leadership.
