Shorewood Snapshot: Volunteer during Yard Clean-Up Day; 'Lend Me a Tenor'

A look at this week's local events and news.

Here's a look at what's coming up this week in Shorewood. If we're missing something, please add it to the calendar.

Give Back during Yard Clean-Up Day — Raking the autumn leaves, taming garden beds, subduing the hedges and untangling the water hoses can be difficult for older adults and the disabled.

Shorewood Connects hopes to address the issue with its annual Yard Clean-Up Day on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, linking volunteers with those who need a hand with yard chores.

About 150 volunteers are needed this year to meet the demand for help, and it's a chance to give back to the community and help your neighbors.

Older and disabled adults seeking more information about yard clean-up should contact Elizabeth Price of the Shorewood Senior Resource Center (414) 847-2727. If you’d like to volunteer, call Sue Kelley at 961-7262 or email at skelley@wi.rr.com. Pre-registration is required.

Shorewood Foundation Dinner — Support the community by attending the annual Shorewood Foundation Dinner Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Hubbard Park Lodge, 3565 N. Morris Blvd.

The price for the dinner is $100 per person, but all proceeds go to the Foundation, which supports many of the organizations and events that happen in Shorewood, including improvements for the school district, the annual Ten Gardens Tour the public art events and the annual 4th of July Fireworks Celebration at Atwater Park.

Cocktails and a silent auction with 30 packages to bid on — including four tickets to a Green Bay Packers game — starts at 6 p.m. with dinner following at 7.

The event includes gourmet dinners at a substantially discounted price, and Foundation Board members have historically purchased the wine for the dinner.

RSVP to Kristin Fraser at 414-962-2275 or Michael S. McCauley at 277-5525.

'Lend Me a Tenor' — Shorewood High School drama students will bring you the comedy, Lend Me a Tenor, Thursday through Sunday. Shows start at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Lend Me a Tenor is a Tony award-winning comedy by Ken Ludwig. Set in September 1934, the general manager of the Cleveland Opera Company, Saunders, is preparing for the performance of the famous Tito Morelli.

But alas, through an odd turn of events, Tito turns out to be a no-show, and Saunders gives the part to his assistant, Max. Max succeeds as Morelli, but suddenly the real Morelli shows up, and soon two Titos are running around in costume, along with two women in lingerie that believe they are with the real Tito Morelli.

Reserved seats will be assigned to those who pre-purchase tickets. Tickets sold at the box office the day of the show will be “open seating” in the unreserved section.

Governmental meeting — Village officials will wrap-up discussion on a 2013 budget on Monday. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 3930 N. Murray Ave.

Due to the generous merchants in Shorewood and else where, the silent auction at the foundation dinner will actually have 30 fabulous silent auction packages for guests to bid on. Thanks to all the wonderful donors, who are too numerous to list here, for supporting Shorewood.
