Optional Changes Could be Coming to Garbage Pickups

Village officials want to buy specialized garbage carts and then sell them to residents to use during weekly garbage pick-ups.

Village of Greendale residents may soon be able to purchase garbage carts that will make it easier - and eventually more efficient - for garbage collectors to pick-up refuse.

Village officials are expected to discuss purchasing an undisclosed number of 65-gallon carts and then sell them to residents, at or around $50 each. The use of these carts, coupled with a new refuse truck, would allow the Department of Public Works to send out two-person crews that could attach the carts to the trucks.

The department currently sends out three-person crews to pick up refuse.

At a Finance Committee meeting Aug. 26, Village President John Hermes asked why the proposed change was not mandatory and across the board for all residents, similarly to how the village handled changes with recycling pick-up in recent years.

The Village, however, has only one truck that works in conjunction with the carts and Village Manager Todd Michaels said he thought the change would be better accepted by residents if it came more gradually.

The Village Board will discuss the matter at its meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 3, at village Hall.
