Lazich Recall Effort Continues As Deadline Nears

Recall efforts in Greendale continued Saturday as the deadline to collect the required amount of signatures nears.

With the deadline to turn in recall signatures for several state senators nearing, efforts to recall State Senator Mary Lazich continued Saturday in Greendale as a small group gathered along 76th Street at Community Center Park with signs to attract passers-by.

The deadline to turn in petitions to recall Sen. Lazich, who represents Wisconsin's 28th District, is May 2.

"Some of the people that have stopped by and that disagree with the recall effort have been really angry, while some were at least willing to have a conversation with us," said Meg Wolfers, a school teacher from Kenosha who is helping organize recall efforts throughout southeastern Wisconsin.

"Others have been very sympathetic, and some of the people who stopped by simply said, 'Thank you.'"

Approximately 21,000 petitions are required to subject state Sen. Lazich to a recall election later this year, and while a recent tally of signatures was unavailable through recall supporters in Greendale on Saturday, a Recall Lazich spokesperson reportedly said more than half of the required signatures had been collected by April 19.

"There has been a good turnout of supporters lately," said Wolfers. "This affects the whole state."

The efforts will continue through Sunday, May 1, at the same location.
