Open Market Moved from Municipal Parking Lot to Broad Street

Broad Street will be closed off every other Saturday from June 23 through Oct. 20 for the Greendale Open Market. The change was proposed after discussions with the Village Center business owners.

The Greendale Village Board voted yesterday to move Greendale Parks and Recreation's Open Market from the Municipal Parking Lot to Broad Street.

The Open Market begins June 23 and is held every other Saturday through Oct. 20. The move will require closing off Broad Street.

Trustee Jim Birmingham, also owner of , said the idea to move the Open Market came from talks with the Greendale Village Business Association, an organization made up of Village Center business owners. They hoped the move would bring more people to the Village Center and improve the visibility of the market. Park and Rec did not make the proposal.

"Whatever you think would be best we’re willing try," said Parks and Rec Director Jackie Schweitzer. "We’ve measured and it is a little narrower gap between but if it would help increase interest and visibility of the market we’re willing to try it."

If it doesn't work Schweitzer said they can always go back to the Municipal Parking Lot.

There will still be openings at the end of the parking lots to allow people to continue to park on Broad Street and the freeing up of the Municipal Parking Lot will open up more spaces. Alternate route signs will be placed so that people know to use Parking Street to go around.

Trustee Allan Sikorski said this was brought up six years ago and almost came together. It never took off because he said business owners were worried about having competing vendors outside of their stores. Birmingham said that wasn't the case anymore and a bunch of store owners are on board.

Resident Jackie Kraemer asked if there was an extra cost for overtime police officers. Village Manager Todd Michaels said that usually when Broad Street is closed off auxillary officers or on-duty police officers are used.

On May 25 Patch polled readers asking if they would like see the market moved to Broad Street. T
