Every day between now and the May 8 primary recall elections, Patch will provide regular updates on what's happening in the campaigns of those who want to be our next governor. Check back with this column throughout the day for the latest from the campaign trail.
2:05 p.m.: Falk wants DNR secretary fired
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Falk is calling for Republican Gov. Scott Walker to fire the state Department of Natural Resources secretary, The Huffington Post reports.
Falk made the demand Monday at a news conference after the Wisconsin State Journal reported that the number of DNR environmental permit violation notices dropped to a 12-year low in 2011. DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp told the newspaper she wants the agency to focus on customer service and not be so intimidating.
1:55 p.m.: Barrett campaigns with Kohl across the state
Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was campaigning Monday with U.S. Senator Herb Kohl in Green Bay, Eau Claire and La Crosse.
Kohl, who formally endorsed Barrett earlier this month, joined Barrett in what is being dubbed the "Restore Wisconsin Values Tour," which will focused on Barrett's "vision to move Wisconsin forward and focus on creating jobs."
1:55 p.m.: Falk to hold live video streaming session on student loans
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Falk will be doing a live streaming video session on her plan to "end the crisis of student loan debt" at 8:30 p.m. Monday.
The former Dane County executive will be joined by Kathleen by Mike Amato, a University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student and AFT member, and by Sam Gehler, president of Young Progressives of Wisconsin. You can check out the event here.
Prior to that, Falk will take part in a Grassroots Express Kickoff Party at 5 p.m. at the Madison Labor Temple, 1602 S. Park St., Madison.
If you ever dealt with the DNR under Doyle (we did), you would understand what Cathy Stepp is talking about.
A temple (from the Latin word templum) is a structure reserved for religious or spiritual activities, such as prayer and sacrifice, or analogous rites.
people feel so entitled? Where is it written that everyone should go to college? We always hear stats on how many kids get INTO college but rarey on how many FINISH. It is not for everybody. There is a need for skilled labor that doesn't require a college education. Crunching numbers sometimes reveals that a college degree can set you back - 4 lost years of earnings plus the cost of the school, books, housing, etc.
Anything else you know? Yeah, some radical that is going to keep our air and water pure. Who wants that?
Graeme Zielinski @gjzielinski Govs. Walker and Christie to appear at business owned by Tim Russell theft victim - http://goo.gl/MBt8p Whoops.
Yeah, hey, how about that DNR. Letting lefty-liberal looney Milwaukee continue to use Lake Michigan, our drinking water source, as a TOILET. When will the DNR step up and make Milwaukee do the right thing and clean up their sewage?
Can't make the link between HIGH PROPERTY TAXES and low wages in the private sector? Student loan programs enrich the Banksters and inflate the cost of education and are a "make work" for Teachers who teach NO MARKETABLE SKILLS., which Students are STUPID ENOUGH TO TAKE. END STUDENT LOANS!
bluecheddar1 @bluecheddar1 John Wiley to Scott Walker: "Listen Up!" http://www.madisonmagazine.com/Madison-Magazine/January-2012/The-Paradoxical-Scott-Walker/Listen-Up-By-John-Wiley/ #wiunion #reclaimWI #UW ...Listen to Wisconsin’s teachers and nurses. Ask them why they decided to do these difficult jobs instead of things they surely could have done for lots more money. Ask the people in the “unruly mobs” outside the Capitol why they take time out of their lives to be there, and what they are so upset about. If you get lots of different answers, think about it: Don’t demonize them for being “unfocused.” Instead, realize that they have so many legitimate complaints that they hardly know where to start. With a couple of different breaks, you would be one of them. Guv, I didn’t say, “Talk to them.” I said, “Listen to them.” They don’t need two words from you, unless those words are “I’m sorry.” When I retire, in a couple of months (after nearly forty years on the state payroll, the last twenty in high-level positions), I’ll be watching future events in Wisconsin—probably from another state. I’ll keep in mind that people get what they vote for and deserve what they get. They voted for you. They put their hopes in you. Sad but true. Prove me wrong. Surprise us. Just listen.
