Daily Recall Election Roundup: April 30

Here are the latest updates from the campaign trail in the upcoming recall elections.

Every day between now and the May 8 primary recall elections, Patch will provide regular updates on what's happening in the campaigns of those who want to be our next governor. Check back with this column throughout the day for the latest from the campaign trail.

2:05 p.m.: Falk wants DNR secretary fired

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Falk is calling for Republican Gov. Scott Walker to fire the state Department of Natural Resources secretary, The Huffington Post reports.

Falk made the demand Monday at a news conference after the Wisconsin State Journal reported that the number of DNR environmental permit violation notices dropped to a 12-year low in 2011. DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp told the newspaper she wants the agency to focus on customer service and not be so intimidating.

1:55 p.m.: Barrett campaigns with Kohl across the state

Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was campaigning Monday with U.S. Senator Herb Kohl in Green Bay, Eau Claire and La Crosse.

Kohl, who formally endorsed Barrett earlier this month, joined Barrett in what is being dubbed the "Restore Wisconsin Values Tour," which will focused on Barrett's "vision to move Wisconsin forward and focus on creating jobs."

1:55 p.m.: Falk to hold live video streaming session on student loans

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Falk will be doing a live streaming video session on her plan to "end the crisis of student loan debt" at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

The former Dane County executive will be joined by Kathleen by Mike Amato, a University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate student and AFT member, and by Sam Gehler, president of Young Progressives of Wisconsin. You can check out the event here.

Prior to that, Falk will take part in a Grassroots Express Kickoff Party at 5 p.m. at the Madison Labor Temple, 1602 S. Park St., Madison.

Looks like the Patch is the democrats campaign manager.
If you ever dealt with the DNR under Doyle (we did), you would understand what Cathy Stepp is talking about.

Cathy Stepp was a great pick to be the DNR Secretary. This was probably Scott Walker's best personnel move. The radical Progressives have long sought to strip the Governor's power to appoint DNR secretaries after Tommy Thompson made the position a Cabinet post. The last thing Wisconsin needs is some radical Sierra Club member sliding their way into the DNR position. The Sierra Club has been a Stalinist protection racket since shortly after its organization.

Falk does realize she actually has to beat Barrett in the primary, and then would have to beat Walker in the June 5th election before she gets to have a say in who's running the DNR, doesn't she?

What is a Madison Labor Temple?
A temple (from the Latin word templum) is a structure reserved for religious or spiritual activities, such as prayer and sacrifice, or analogous rites.
Craig April 30, 2012 at 09:24 pm
Nothing to do with religion in Madison, that city is full of scumbags....they all hang out at the Labor Temple. That place is really Falked up.

I'm very confused by the "student loan crisis"....did they not know they were taking out loans? I don't get it - I worked my way thru school - my husband took off two years to save up money. Why do
people feel so entitled? Where is it written that everyone should go to college? We always hear stats on how many kids get INTO college but rarey on how many FINISH. It is not for everybody. There is a need for skilled labor that doesn't require a college education. Crunching numbers sometimes reveals that a college degree can set you back - 4 lost years of earnings plus the cost of the school, books, housing, etc.

When will Jeff Scrima go back to doing whatever it is that he did? The joke is getting tired Jeffrey. We need a real leader.
Keith Schmitz May 1, 2012 at 12:13 am
Yup, so much so it is regularly rated as one of the best cities in the country to live.

You know your stuff ARD. Turns out T. Boone Pickers is palin' with Carl Pope of the Sierra Club.
Anything else you know? Yeah, some radical that is going to keep our air and water pure. Who wants that?

Things get crazier everyday with Walker.

DNR = Damn Near Russia. Too many regulations already. Let's help Scott Walker stop the liberal insanity.
Joan May 1, 2012 at 12:31 pm
It isn't the 'loans' per se', it is the high interest rates associated with the student loans. My daughter worked 3 jobs while going to college, and still ended up owing on student loans. She still is paying off student loans with interest rates over 12%. She pays her bills on time, has a good credit rating, and still is being charged excessive interest rates on student loans.

Hey Patch - Thanks for being HONEST and showing your links to the Huff-Po. YES - Patch is the voice of Arianna Huffington and is funded by Tim Armstrong of AOL.
Yeah, hey, how about that DNR. Letting lefty-liberal looney Milwaukee continue to use Lake Michigan, our drinking water source, as a TOILET. When will the DNR step up and make Milwaukee do the right thing and clean up their sewage?
enicar333 May 1, 2012 at 12:52 pm
You don't think it might be because Teachers at UW are overpaid/overcompensated and demand luxury teaching facilities - now - do you?
Can't make the link between HIGH PROPERTY TAXES and low wages in the private sector? Student loan programs enrich the Banksters and inflate the cost of education and are a "make work" for Teachers who teach NO MARKETABLE SKILLS., which Students are STUPID ENOUGH TO TAKE. END STUDENT LOANS!

I seriously doubt Walker will take this advice. He constantly repeats his talking points--that is all he knows---his talking points.
bluecheddar1 ‏ @bluecheddar1 John Wiley to Scott Walker: "Listen Up!" http://www.madisonmagazine.com/Madison-Magazine/January-2012/The-Paradoxical-Scott-Walker/Listen-Up-By-John-Wiley/ #wiunion #reclaimWI #UW ...Listen to Wisconsin’s teachers and nurses. Ask them why they decided to do these difficult jobs instead of things they surely could have done for lots more money. Ask the people in the “unruly mobs” outside the Capitol why they take time out of their lives to be there, and what they are so upset about. If you get lots of different answers, think about it: Don’t demonize them for being “unfocused.” Instead, realize that they have so many legitimate complaints that they hardly know where to start. With a couple of different breaks, you would be one of them. Guv, I didn’t say, “Talk to them.” I said, “Listen to them.” They don’t need two words from you, unless those words are “I’m sorry.” When I retire, in a couple of months (after nearly forty years on the state payroll, the last twenty in high-level positions), I’ll be watching future events in Wisconsin—probably from another state. I’ll keep in mind that people get what they vote for and deserve what they get. They voted for you. They put their hopes in you. Sad but true. Prove me wrong. Surprise us. Just listen.
Pete May 1, 2012 at 02:49 pm
Listen to the spoiled few? Taking a Wisconsin pension to another state! Nice! If being a state employee is so difficult and tough get a job in the private sector . No one is holding a gun to your head and making you work for the state. Quit whining!
Greg May 1, 2012 at 05:04 pm
So is Sheboygan. They must have a Labor Temple too.
Greg May 1, 2012 at 05:19 pm
Governor Walker did listen, and he has nothing to be sorry about. After 40 years of probably being over paid, I hope John Wiley doesn't let the door hit him in the butt and he retires comfortably in a state where he can find happiness. Take the money and run Johnny, it's really all that your 40 years have been about.

We can look up to see who signed a recall of their elected official because of grievances, but weRead More cannot look up who donated large wads of ca$h to the same official's campaign...Thank you GOP for turning that window of open accountability into a one-way mirror with the GOP looking out and everyone else stuck looking inward, wandering why we don't get the same vantage point. A bit hypocritical don't you think? And BTW, your GOP budget just ticked off every principal, superintendent and public school family in the state of WI today. Good luck on that second term of negative growth (-0.74).

I think Scott Walker's record speaks for itself in terms of state job growth and misplacedRead More priorities. "Blue fisters" didn't create Scott Walker, he's been a creature of ALEC since the early 1990s. Let's see if he decides to do a Bachmann in 2014. A lot of people who didn't vote in the recall election because they didn't understand/agree may not have voted for him in 2010. Anyone who has a 20-something college grad who can't find a job, male spouse, family member or friend in their 50s who can't find a job, was cut from needed health care benefits, etc., is bound to be looking for better leadership.
