Board Approves Street Rehabilitation Program

Village will spend $753,800 to improve infrastructure.

The Village Board unanimously approved Tuesday the municipality's 2011 street and drainage improvement program.

The annual Department of Public Works program consists of repaving streets, repairing sidewalks, adjust manhole covers and water valves and repair sewers.

The total cost of the program this year will cost the village $753,800. This amount is $12,100 less than the $765,900 in the budget. The surplus, according to city staff, will be considered project contingencies until the bidding has been completed.

Most of the program is paid for through the village's capital improvement fund.

Some of the street rehabilitation segments include:

  • Street rehabilitation work on Darnell Lane from Southway to Catalpa at an estimated cost of $114,000.
  • Street rehabilitation work on Briarclift Court from Brandon Street to the dead end at an estimated cost of $70,000.
  • Drainage work at numerous locations at an estimated cost of $184,000.
  • Cracksealing in various locations at an estimated cost of $87,000.

Trustee Sally Chadwick asked village officials if they had a plan to eliminate some of the projects if the program becomes cost prohibitive due to higher than expected bids.

“If by chance that would happen and we would have to drop one, we would drop whichever segment that would correlate to the amount money that we were missing during the final bid process,” said Carl Tisonik, the village’s director of public works. “We would try to keep as much of the project intact as possible.”

Once the village accepts a bid, the price is locked in, Tisonik explained.

“We are prepared to do some dissecting if needed,” he added.
