Advanced Disposal Wins Greendale Recycling Contract

The Greendale Village Board gave unanimous approval Tuesday to hire Advanced Disposal Solid Waste to handle the village's recycling.

Village Manager Todd Michaels said Advanced, formally known as Veolia ES Solid Waste Midwest, will take over the contract from 2013 to 2017 and will save the community $100,000. The contract also gives the village the opportunity to take over the recycling portion of the contract starting in the second year if it so chooses.  

“This contract is the same service we’re getting now, but it costs us $100,000 less,” Trustee James Birmingham said.

Michaels said the village sent out requests for proposals for the waste disposal service contract in the fall to Advanced, John’s Disposal Service Inc., and Waste Management of Wisconsin. Waste Management didn’t have a competitive bid for the contract and John’s was rejected because they wouldn’t guarantee pricing for the second through fifth year of the contract.

The village is looking for greater efficiencies, such as switching to two person crews for trash instead of three person crews, leaders said, but they stressed no public works jobs will be eliminated due to the new contract for recycling.

“While we’re saving $100,000, we’re not impacting our staff in anyway,” Trustee Ronald Barbian said. “There will be no staffing or service reduction.”
