Updates: Winter Storm Causes Closings, Traffic Backups

A wet, blowing snow hit the Milwaukee area Tuesday afternoon and continued Wednesday morning.

Updated 10 a.m. Wednesday

The Greendale School District has canceled school as a winter storm continued to move through the area Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Milwaukee County that remains in effect until noon Wednesday. Patch's media partners at WISN 12 News say the higher totals will likely be over southern Milwaukee County and Racine and Kenosha counties.

By 9 a.m., 8.6 inches had been reported in Franklin and 7.1 inches at Mitchell International Airport.

Traffic is slow on the freeways this morning, with slippery stretches and snow making travel more difficult than usual. According to the Wisconsin DOT's traffic map, freeways throughout the Milwaukee area are slippery.

The map shows traffic speeds of varying from 30-55 mph between the Mitchell and Marquette interchanges on I-43/94. Traffic is moving between 45 mph and regular speeds on I-894. Traffic from the Marquette Interchange to the Zoo Interchange is moving slow in spots, at speeds between 30 and 45 mph, and at normal speeds in others.

Traffic on I-43 west of the Hale Interchange, and I-94 south of the Mitchell Interchange are generally moving at normal speeds.

In addition to Greendale public schools, Martin Luther High School also closed today.

For more closings, visit WISN 12 News.

Many flights at Mitchell International are arriving and leaving on time, but there are some delays and cancellations. If you're planning to travel today (or need to get someone to or from the airport), check arriving flight status and departure status before you drive over.

Greendale School District closed late after the kids were waiting for the buses and walking to school. Just another screw up or day in the Greendale School District.

We can look up to see who signed a recall of their elected official because of grievances, but weRead More cannot look up who donated large wads of ca$h to the same official's campaign...Thank you GOP for turning that window of open accountability into a one-way mirror with the GOP looking out and everyone else stuck looking inward, wandering why we don't get the same vantage point. A bit hypocritical don't you think? And BTW, your GOP budget just ticked off every principal, superintendent and public school family in the state of WI today. Good luck on that second term of negative growth (-0.74).

Jason- See the IRS for list of donors to pro republican groups. They were illegally collected andRead More distributed. You signed the recall, no one made you do it. Deal with it already and stop changing the subject to interject some off the wall non comparison. ~in solidarity

I think Scott Walker's record speaks for itself in terms of state job growth and misplacedRead More priorities. "Blue fisters" didn't create Scott Walker, he's been a creature of ALEC since the early 1990s. Let's see if he decides to do a Bachmann in 2014. A lot of people who didn't vote in the recall election because they didn't understand/agree may not have voted for him in 2010. Anyone who has a 20-something college grad who can't find a job, male spouse, family member or friend in their 50s who can't find a job, was cut from needed health care benefits, etc., is bound to be looking for better leadership.
