Oak Creek Reacts to Connecticut School Shooting

Oak Creek knows from experience that mass shootings can happen anywhere, 'even in the quietest and gentlest of communities,' Superintendent Sara Burmeister said.

Details continue to surface about , where a gunman entered an elementary school and took the lives of a reported 26 people, including 20 children.

In Oak Creek, the site of a mass shooting just four months ago, School Superintendent Sara Burmeister said she cried as she heard the news.

"It's a tragedy beyond words to describe," Burmeister said. "You can't help but think that this could have been your child, your grandchild, your students, your teachers, your schools, your community.

"We always think, 'It can’t happen here,' and we pray fervently that it won't. But as we know from our experience this summer, it can happen anywhere, even in the quietest and gentlest of communities. My heart just aches for that entire community. I can't imagine how they will recover from this horror."

President Barack Obama mentioned the shooting at the Oak Creek Sikh temple, where six people were killed and four wounded, in remarks Friday afternoon

"As a country we have been through this too many times. Whether it's an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago, these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods and these children are our children," Obama said.

Mayor Steve Scaffidi posted on the city's Facebook page: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families in Newtown, CT today. As a country, we must find a way to stop this violence."

Burmeister said the school district conducts lockdown drills at all of its schools on a regular basis as part of its "crisis plan." The crisis plan is kept confidential for security purposes, but some pieces, like the drills, are shared publicly.

"Teachers always review the procedures for the drills with their students, and then we run the drills to ensure students and staff know what to do in certain types of emergencies, such as a lockdown," Burmeister said.

Doors to Oak Creek schools are locked during the school day. Monitors and buzzers are at the doors so that school office staff can see who is at the door and speak with the person or people about why they are there.

If a person is acting suspicious, the school's secretary contacts an administrator, who determines whether the person has a legitimate reason to be there, Burmeister said. The person may be asked to leave, and police may be contacted.

Does anyone know if there will be a candlelight vigil in Oak Creek for the victims of the Sandy Hook shootings except for the gathering in Brookfield?

If there isn't one then how do you go about starting one?

Why do you want a vigil? We lose more kids daily from violence imposed by their caretakers and mother's boyfriends and no one does much except lock them up. I think it would be more productive to find out how to protect yourself and yours from mass shootings and to force your elected Wash Reps to force NCI to report persons with mental health DX in the background records checking which would prevent many from buying and using. Mental health drugs appears to be a common factor in these severely disturbed manic individuals. In short if one is mental health on prozac or paxil or lithium or zoloft medications they should not be allowed to own or purchase a gun But they can and do. WI law requires collecting the data the feds fail to use or report it. The feds required the states to pass laws as related to mental health gun ownership and record keeping then omit it from their reporting. They send in the FBI to calm things down so they go away and chirp about taking away our constitutional rights because they don't do their jobs. I find few in government do. .This kid was a genius with a personality disorder? When and where was it Diagnosed? What role did Sandy Hook play in the dx? As a substitute I see many brilliant children in special ed classrooms that can't function in the regular classrooms probably as related to the slow pace of the average student. In special ed I don't see teaching or learning taking place those classrooms are producing criminals. NOTHING MORE.

For Clairity, THE LAW IS: Federal law prohibits possession of a firearm or ammunition by any person who has been “adjudicated as a mental defective” or involuntarily “committed to any mental institution.”1 No federal law, however, requires states to report the identities of these individuals to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (“NICS”) database, which the FBI uses to perform background checks prior to firearm transfers. The Wisconsin Department of Justice (“DOJ”) is required to promulgate rules to convey information in a timely manner to the NICS database regarding individuals ordered not to possess a firearm under: Wis. Stat. § 51.20(13)(cv)(1) (mental health commitments where the individual is found to be a danger to self or public safety); § 51.45(13)(i)(1) (treatment for and commitment of an individual incapacitated by alcohol or suffering from alcoholism); § 54.10(3)(f)(1) (individuals who have a guardian appointed for them); or § 55.12(10)(a) (order of protective services or protective placement).2 DOJ is also required to promulgate rules to convey information to the NICS database for cancellations of court orders for these mental health-related issues
