Neighbor Accused of Stealing Jewelry, Credit Card

Couple gave the man a spare key 10 years ago to feed their pets and used the key to break-in, police say.

A 25-year-old Greendale man is accused of using his neighbor's spare key to break into her home and steal jewelry and a credit card.

Nicholas Scott Hamby was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court Friday with one count of burglary and one count of unlawful use of personal documents. If convicted, he faces up to 10 1/2 years in prison and $35,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Oct. 1, a woman living in the 5300 block of Olympia Lane contacted the Greendale Police Department after she noticed someone stole jewelry, $50 in change and a credit card out of her house. There was no sign of forced entry into the home and the woman discovered the card had been used at Walgreens and Andy's gas station on Rawson Avenue.

Investigators were led to Hamby in the investigation and he admitted taking the items from the victim's house. He said the victim gave him a spare key 10 years ago so he could watch her pets while she and her husband were out of town and he used the key to get into the home for the burglary.

Hamby is currently being held in Milwaukee County Jail while awaiting trial.
