Meet Nova, The Greendale Police Department's New Police Dog

After months of raising money, the Greendale Police Department was able to buy a police dog.

Nova, an 18-month-old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix, is the newest member of the Greendale Police Department and he'll serve the village as the department's K-9 unit.

According to the Greendale Police Department's Facebook page, Officer Tony Fitzgerald, Nova's handler, went to North Carolina to train with Nova.

On April 2, they posted:

We have been waiting a long time and are proud to introduce you to K-9 NOVA, our 18 month old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix. Nova and Tony are currently getting to know each other. Tony says that Nova appeared to accept him quickly, and Tony is pretty excited to start the formal training with Nova.

The Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals gave the Greendale Police Department $14,000 to buy Nova, and $850 to buy Fitzgerald's protective resistant dog vest.

The department, which did not use any taxpayer money, was able to raise all the necessary funds to get the program started through donations and fundraising that included T-shirt sales, private donations, business sponsorships, and a bake sale.

They also held a contest to name the dog, which they decided on last month.
