Man Will Spend 1 Year in Jail for Child Porn Possession

Man with more than 200 child pornography images on his computer will avoid prison as long as he adheres to the conditions of his sentence, but will spend the next year in county jail with work release privileges.

A Greendale man caught with a stockpile of child pornography on his computer will avoid prison time, but will spend the next year in county jail.

Matthew L Schmidt, 24, was sentenced by Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Richard Sankovitz Thursday to one year in the House of Corrections with work released on one count of possession of child pornography. Schmidt was also sentenced to five years in prison for two more counts of possession of child pornography, however, the sentence is stayed as long as he meets the conditions of his sentence.

In November, Milwaukee Police Department officers and FBI officers found child pornography on Schmidt’s computer inside his home in the 7000 block of Dobson Court after executing a search warrant on the home.

About 243 images were found on the computer, which Schmidt admitted to downloading via a file sharing service then storing on an external hard drive.

He could have spent up to 125 years in prison after he was initially charged with five counts of possession of child pornography, however, two of the counts were dismissed in May as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.
