Man Charged In Connection With Southridge Shooting Incident

Police say Cory Jason, 21, walked into Southridge Mall concealing the gun used in an accidental shooting in the mall parking lot Feb. 21. He's been charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

A 21-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged in connection with a Feb. 21 incident in which a man accidentally shot himself in the leg in the Southridge Mall parking lot.

Police say that after Cory Jason's uncle shot himself in his truck, he gave Jason the gun. Jason concealed the gun and walked into the men's bathroom near the food court, where he unjammed the weapon and put it into a waistband in the small of his back.

Before he could back to his uncle's vehicle, however, he was stopped by a Greendale police officer.

He was arrested and charged last week with carrying a concealed weapon. If convicted, he could be fined as much as $10,000 and imprisoned up to nine months.

According to the complaint, Jason's uncle said he met his nephew to give him money so Jason could "pay off a debt with some rough people."

The uncle initially said he hurt his right leg running into a pitchfork, according to the complaint. Police later learned he shot himself and gave Jason the gun afterward.Β

A plea of not guilty was entered March 7 on behalf of Jason, according to online court records. A pre-trial conference is set for April 17.
