Greendale Police Remind Drivers of Safety in the Mall Lots During Construction

People can be cited on Southridge property of Village ordinances, such as reckless driving, are violated.

The Greendale Police Department would like to remind everyone to drive safely in the Southridge Mall parking lots over the next year during construction.

Hundreds of vehicles come and go from Southridge Mall over the course of a week, according to the department.

Mall renovations and the new construction project on the south end of the Mall will probably cause detours and poor visibility due to construction signs and equipment. Police and mall security are working together to increase parking lot patrols.

Not all traffic laws can be enforced on private property, such as Southridge Mall parking lots. However the Village has ordinances that cover driving that is dangerous such as speeding, failing to stop for stop signs on the property, and driving recklessly in the lot. Drivers can be cited if the rules are violated.

The Greendale Police Department said in a press release, “Citations being issued on Southridge property are not common.  It only occurs when a person’s driving is dangerous to others or themselves, and frequently is because a citizen called to complain about other driver’s actions or due to an accident in the parking lot.  Mall security patrols will call the police if they observe reckless driving.”

Let’s all slow down and drive with care and consideration for other drivers when driving in the parking lots. Our shopping experience will be safer and more enjoyable.”
