Greendale Police Catch U.S. Bank Robber

A man allegedly stole $1,300 from the bank and then fled to Southridge Mall.

Greendale police arrested a man for robbing on 76th Street on Tuesday.

Matthew E. Schmid, 22, allegedly demanded money from the bank teller and fled on foot after taking $1,300.

Schmid allegedly ran across the parking lot in an attempt to hide at Southridge Mall, where he changed into different clothing he had previously hidden in the mall.  The suspect eluded arrest in the mall.

Sgt. Mike Adamczak identified Schmid after seeing photographs of him in the bank and recalled seeing him in a store in the mall. Evidence obtained from the store assisted the police in identifying Schmid as a suspect.

Schmid was later located at the 2200 block of South 78th Street and was taken into custody without incident. West Allis police officers helped with the arrest.

Schmid was allegedly found with some of the stolen money. Additional money was later recovered in Milwaukee.

Greendale investigators also said Schmid was allegedly involved in two burglaries and the arson of a residence in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's office charged Schmid with one count of robbery. Milwaukee Police are currently seeking charges for the incidents that occurred in their jurisdiction.
