Crossing Guard Struck by Motorist Wednesday Suffered Significant Injuries

Crossing guard Karen Ziglinski, 62, was alert when she was transported to Froedtert Hospital by paramedics, but was treated for significant injuries after being struck by a motorist Wednesday morning.

According to the Greendale Police Department, Ziglinski was stationed in the crosswalk at the intersection of Northway and Arrowood facing westbound with her portable stop sign raised to stop traffic.

An 87-year-old West Allis woman did not notice or disregarded the handheld stop sign and struck Ziglinski. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

“In light of yesterday's events, I am reminding everyone to drive carefully," he wrote. "The responsibility for safe driving falls on each of us. If we all drive a little more carefully (and less distracted), everyone will be safer. Put your coffee cup down, don't text and drive, slow down and pay extra attention in school zones and around buses."
