Child Left in Car While Mom Shops at Resale Event, Police Say

A 22-year-old Milwaukee woman is accused of leaving her 6-year-old child unattended in her car for at least 30 minutes while shopping at the Greendale Entertainment Association resale event at Greendale High School on Sept. 14.

Elizabeth Perez-Martinez was charged with one count of misdemeanor child neglect in Milwaukee County Circuit Court last week.

According to the criminal complaint, a witness told police he saw Perez-Martinez and her child exit the high school and go to her car in the parking lot. Perez-Martinez put her child in the car and went back inside, the witness told police.

The witness said the child sat in the car for at least 30 minutes.

The child told police she felt hot from sitting in the car, which was in direct sunlight while temperatures outside reached 60 degrees, according to police. The car windows were left open approximately two inches.

Perez-Martinez was paged by resale event workers and returned to her car, where police were waiting.

If convicted, Perez-Martinez faces a maximum of 9 months of imprisonment, $10,000 in fines or both.
