Accused Shoplifter Had Heroin at Mall, Police Say

A 30-year-old Franklin woman was caught trying to shoplift at Kohl's Department Store at Southridge, and now faces felony drug charges.

An attempted shoplifting excursion at Southridge Mall has turned into bigger trouble for a 30-year-old Franklin woman.

Jennifer Copsey was charged with felony possession heroin in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on April 5.

According to court documents, on July 17, Copsey was being held at Kohl’s Department Store in the mal after being suspected of shoplifting. A Greendale police officer arrested Copsey for retail theft and a search of Copsey revealed a bag of heroin inside a pouch in her purse, which also contained drug paraphernalia.

Copsey told police the pouch was not hers and that she was only holding it for her friend.

It is not stated in the complaint why there was a delay of nearly nine months between the arrest and charges being filed.

Copsey, if convicted, faces up to 3Β½ years of imprisonment and $10,000 in fines. She was previously convicted of possession of cocaine in August 2011.
