Blindsided by a Job Loss?

Although you may not have seen it coming, don't let it knock you down for long. There is a lot of work for you to do -- and the sooner you start, the better you will feel.

You are not alone.  Millions of people have lost their jobs since the economic turmoil of  2008.  Although you may not have seen it coming, don't let it knock you down for long.  There is a lot of work for you to do -- and the sooner you start, the better you will feel.

Your number one goal is to get a really good handle on your expenses.  Make a list of everything that you have to pay each month.  Then sort the list so that the most important items are first, second, etc..., and the least important are last.

Then, start with number one.  Assuming this is your landlord or mortgage, give them a call.  Ask them what can be done in this situation.  You are not asking for a handout, you are brainstorming with them.  If they are willing to help in some way, get it in writing.  Then move on to your second most important expense and repeat the process.  After you have completed your list, you will feel like a huge burden has been lifted from your shoulders – and, because you were proactive, you will feel a return of some 'control' over your life.  This mindset will be vital as you move into job hunt mode.

Your second big goal is to get LOTS of support.  Connect with other people you know that are job searching.  Network like crazy.  Take a Linked In class from Wayne Breitbarth (our local guru).  Take advantage of the great Workforce Development resources in Pewaukee.  Join a job hunt support group.  Get friends and family to circle the wagons around you.  Do whatever you can to keep your spirits up, keep your forward momentum, and believe in yourself.
