U.S. Mailboat, Sprecher’s, Yerkes Laboratory, and Watson’s Wild West Show

Departure on Saturday, September 8 is from the Greendale Historical Society at 5650 Parking Street in Greendale, WI at 8:15 a.m. with anticipated return at 5:30 p.m. Free parking is available.

The all-inclusive tour will visit four unique locations in beautiful southeastern Wisconsin.

A highlight of the trip on Saturday, September 8 will include the Lake Geneva Cruise Line U.S. Mailboat Tour, a tradition since 1870. Visitors will experience this unique marine mail delivery system as daredevil carriers deliver mail to homes around the pristine Lake Geneva. According to Lake Geneva Cruise Line this one-of-a-kind postal adventure has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning News, and the Travel Channel’s Bizarre World with Andrew Zimmern, NBC’s Today Show, CNN News, and in People Magazine and the Wall St. Journal.

The trip includes lunch at Sprecher’s Restaurant & Pub where diners can enjoy a hearty meal with one of the micro-brewery’s award-winning gourmet sodas or specialty beers. Next stop is a visit to the world famous University of Chicago’s Yerkes Observatory in William’s Bay. Hailed as the “birthplace of modern astrophysics”, the massive dome houses the world’s largest 40-inch refracting telescope which was exhibited in 1893 at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Observatory was the setting for a few minutes in the 1996 movie Chain Reaction which featured a gunfight on the roof and a chase scene across frozen Lake Geneva.

The final stop offers entertainment and a step back in time at Watson’s Wild West Museum featuring a historical perspective on pioneer life including the Tumbleweed Mine, a saloon, cowboy artifacts, a blacksmith shop and gift store.

The $85 cost includes relaxing round-trip transportation on an air-conditioned motor coach, lunch, and admission fees to scheduled sites.

Proceeds will benefit the society’s fundraising efforts toward renovation of the Greendale Grounds Building and Hose Tower.
